Discover Ferreira: Routes and Architectural History
Accommodation in Ferreira
Ferreira offers different perspectives for planning your trip: routes with their own paths and buildings with artistic and architectural features. By organizing your interests, you can decide whether to focus more on a route, sacred architecture or the history of individual buildings. There is also a mill site by the river and a town hall building with distinctive architectural features.
Routes and landscape
The Plaza del Ayuntamiento - Balneario Augassantas route begins at Plaza del Ayuntamiento in O Castro de Ferreira. From there, it passes a sulphur water spring and then reaches Balneario Augassantas. The starting point, spring and spa give the route a clear sequence. A second route, the PR-G 274 Ruta do Xanarteiro, begins at the Monasterio de Santa MarĂa de Ferreira. It follows paths through vineyards to the Augas Santas spring. The routes differ in their starting points and the landmarks mentioned: one runs from the plaza, past the sulphur water spring, to the spa; the other leads from the monastery along vineyard paths to the Augas Santas spring. Choosing a route by its landmarks gives you two different focal points for planning your trip.
Monastery and sacred architecture
The Monasterio de San Salvador de Ferreira preserves a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. The nave has a 16th-century wooden ceiling in the Mudéjar tradition. The church and ceiling therefore bring together different periods of construction: the wooden ceiling adds a later architectural detail to the Romanesque church. It is the only monastery in the Ribeira Sacra where monastic life continues today.
The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa MarĂa de Ferreira offers another point of artistic and historical interest. Its main altarpiece dates from 1835, is Neoclassical in style and was painted by Pedro de Castinandi. The year, style and painter provide different clues for dating and interpreting the work artistically.
Architectural history and riverside setting
The Casa do Concello de PantĂłn stands out for its architectural history and floor plan. Its original structure dates from the 17th century; the building was altered later. It is associated with the Gayoso family and has an L-shaped floor plan and walls made of granite ashlar. These features describe different aspects of the building: its original construction, later alterations, a historical family connection, and the specific form of its layout and masonry. Unlike the main altarpiece of the Igrexa Parroquial de Santa MarĂa de Ferreira, which is characterized by its date, style and painter, the Casa is defined by its architectural history and form.
The MuĂño de Mato is located on the banks of the Ferreira River, adding a distinctive riverside setting to your trip plans. Alongside the historic buildings and routes, it offers a direct connection to the river. If you would like to consider both cultural buildings and the landscape, these different themes can shape your plans.
