Lago: Beach, Birdlife and Coastal Route
Accommodation in Lago
Playa de Lago connects Lago with a clearly defined coastal theme: fine white sand, gentle surf and a straight shoreline. Winter birdwatching along the coast and the Camino Natural de la Ruta del Cantábrico add to the appeal. The Xove section of this route runs from Playa de Lago to Playa de Esteiro. This means the destination offers both a specific beach experience and nature and hiking themes, which you can weigh differently when planning your stay.
Beach and coastal profile
Playa de Lago is about 650 metres long. Its fine white sand, gentle surf and straight shoreline give the beach a distinctive profile. Its approximate length indicates its extent, while the sand, surf and shoreline describe the character of the coast. Playa de Lago is also more than just a beach: it is the starting point of the Xove section. If you want your stay to focus primarily on the coast, you can therefore choose between the beach itself and the route as two distinct priorities.
Winter birdwatching
The area between O Portiño de Morás and Playa de Lago is part of the Mariña Lucense birdwatching route; the lagoon at Playa de Lago is a particular highlight. In winter, numerous gulls, cormorants, red-throated divers and black-necked grebes can be observed along the coast at Playa de Lago. The seasonal distinction is important for planning: while the beach features—sand, surf and shoreline—describe the coast, the birdlife is specifically associated with winter. Lago therefore offers a nature experience with a clearly defined season as well as its coastal profile.
The Camino Natural de la Ruta del Cantábrico
The Xove section of the Camino Natural de la Ruta del Cantábrico runs from Playa de Lago to Playa de Esteiro and is 12.5 kilometres long. The route is classified as a coastal trail of moderate difficulty. Its length and difficulty rating answer different planning questions: the distance indicates the extent of the section, while the rating indicates how challenging it is. The Camino Natural de la Ruta del Cantábrico also runs along the boundary of the Costa de la Mariña Occidental, which is designated as a ZEC, LIC and ZEPA; along the route, it enters and leaves the protected area at various points. This relationship with the protected area is also part of the route’s profile.
A granary made entirely of stone
One architectural detail offers a different perspective: the Hórreo da Barxa in Lago is made entirely of stone. Unlike the beach and coastal route, this specific feature draws attention to the construction of a named building. If you would like to include architecture alongside the coast and nature in your travel plans, the hórreo adds another perspective to the other themes.
