Mera: Camino Primitivo and Romanesque Church
Accommodation in Mera
Visitors who choose Mera as a destination will find two specific points of interest in the Camino Primitivo and the architecture of San Pedro de Mera. There is also an archaeological settlement, a traditional house, and other named heritage sites. You can therefore shape your trip around the pilgrimage route, medieval architecture, or different traces of local history.
Camino Primitivo and directions
On the way to Crecente, the Camino Primitivo runs along almost the entire length of the LU-P-2901 road. It also passes through BacurĂn and San Pedro de Mera before continuing to San Román da Retorta. The two details complement each other: the road reference describes the route toward Crecente, while the sequence of places provides further specific waypoints. This makes it possible to locate the pilgrimage route both by its connection to the road and by the named places along it.
The Romanesque Church of San Pedro de Mera
The Church of San Pedro de Mera is a notable example of Romanesque architecture in Galicia. It was built in the 12th century. Its plain façade and well-preserved stone structure create an understated exterior impression; original architectural features have been preserved inside. The capitals are particularly striking, decorated with plant and geometric motifs. Capitals are the upper parts of columns or pillars; the motifs show two distinct types of design: organic forms and geometric patterns. This makes it possible to see the contrast between the plain exterior and the decorated architectural details. Restoration work has preserved the church’s historic character. The church is a point of interest for those interested in medieval art and religious history.
Other traces of heritage
There are also various cultural points of interest outside the church. In San Pedro de Abaixo, Casa do Xordo, a traditional house, is part of the local heritage. In Taboeiro, Os Castros, also known as Castro de Taboeiro, refers to the same archaeological settlement; the two names therefore denote one place, not two separate destinations. In San Pedro de Arriba, the granary “Hórreo 1” is among the named structures. In Hospital, Casa do Hospital e de Audiencia is associated with the designation “Hospital.”
There was once an important pilgrims’ hospital in San Pedro de Mera. Taken together, these are two distinct connections to pilgrimage: the route of the Camino Primitivo and the former existence of a hospital for pilgrims.
Terras de Auga e Cultura
San Pedro de Mera is part of the Terras de Auga e Cultura program. The program’s routes pass through parishes with tourist signage. The Concello de Lugo installed the signs, and the Agencia de Turismo de Galicia funded them. The program’s affiliation, route, and signage thus form a shared framework for orientation. If you rely on the signs during a tour, check beforehand whether they are in place.
