Outeiro De Rei: Walking Routes Along the Miño and Cultural History
Accommodation in Outeiro De Rei
Outeiro de Rei offers several starting points for planning a trip: walking routes along the Miño, granite landscapes, and historical and craft-related themes. The routes differ in both length and course. Other highlights include the Penas de Rodas, with sweeping views across the Terra Chá plain, opportunities for recreation at Campo de Santa Isabel, and the history of Casa Forte.
Walking Routes Along the Miño
The Camiño do Miño walking route runs for 18 km through Outeiro de Rei and partly along the Miño River. The Ruta da Insua de Seivane offers a different kind of route: this easy circular walk of about 2 km leads to Insua de Seivane, an island formed in the riverbed of the Miño.
The circular route crosses the Ponte Colgante de Parada and follows a fishermen’s path around the island. River conditions can affect both the practicality of the walk and access. Take this into account when planning.
The routes therefore differ in length and course: the Camiño do Miño runs through the municipality and partly along the river; the shorter circular walk leads to the island and crosses a suspension bridge before following a fishermen’s path.
Granite Landscapes and Protected Areas
The Penas de Rodas consist of two granite outcrops at an elevation of 619 m and offer sweeping views across the Terra Chá plain. They are also associated with a recreational area. Fishing takes place at Campo de Santa Isabel; in good weather, the area is also used for recreation and swimming.
The natural and protected-area designations refer to different locations. The Ruta da Insua de Seivane lies in the core area of the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve and within the Parga-Ladra-Támoga Special Protection Area. Outeiro de Rei is one of the municipalities in the Parga-Ladra-Támoga Natura 2000 site. Marcelle Natureza is located within the Natura 2000 network, in a Site of Community Importance and in the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve.
Cultural History and Craftsmanship
Casa Forte de Outeiro de Rei traces its origins to a 15th-century medieval fortress. It was first inhabited by the Irish O’Kelly family, then passed into the ownership of the Gayoso family. The pottery of Bonxe offers a different cultural connection: the craft is passed down through families by inheritance. The history of a building and the passing down of a craft within families are thus distinct themes.
