Palas De Rei: The Camino de Santiago, Churches and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Palas De Rei
Palas de Rei is shaped by the Camino de Santiago, churches and medieval buildings, as well as its river landscape. When comparing hotels in Palas De Rei, you can choose your destination based on your interests: the route landmarks help you navigate the Camino, the history of the buildings offers a variety of historical themes, and the Torrentes de Mácara focus on a riverside route.
Landmarks on the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago passes through the Os Chacotes recreation area on its way to Palas de Rei; the Pabellón de Peregrinos is located there. As the route leaves the town, the Camino Francés passes through Campo dos Romeiros, a traditional gathering place for pilgrims. Os Chacotes and Campo dos Romeiros are therefore two distinct reference points for navigating the route. Ponte Ferreira is associated with the Camino Francés and Camino Primitivo routes.
Churches and medieval buildings
The Church of San Tirso is a Romanesque church dating from the last third of the 12th century. The main portal and part of the façade remain from the original structure. The Church of San Salvador de Vilar de Donas was part of a former monastery belonging to the Order of Santiago. San Xurxo de Augas Santas is built of granite masonry and has a main altarpiece dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Castelo de Pambre was built by Gonzalo Ozores de Ulloa around 1375. It is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered the finest example of medieval military architecture in Galicia. The Casa-Torre de Quindimil has a different visitor status: the property is privately owned, is not open to visitors, and is also designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. Muíño de Pambre is an ethnographic mill.
Rock formations and river landscapes
At Penedos Brancos, white quartz rocks can be seen among the scrub. The names Casacamiño and Hospital near Penedos Brancos also clearly point to a connection with pilgrimages. This landscape feature therefore combines a visible geological characteristic with clues to the history of pilgrimage.
The Torrentes de Mácara are in the municipality of Palas de Rei, in the upper reaches of the Río Ulla, where its waters meet the Río Pambre. The route begins at Castelo de Pambre and continues on foot along a path beside the river; trail conditions may vary. Numerous waterfalls and pools follow one another upstream, and the surrounding area is characterized by many strawberry trees. When planning, it is therefore important to consider not only the river but also the specific route along its banks.
Getting there and practical planning
