Baiona combines fortress history with coastal and nature attractions. Notable places include the Fortress of Monterreal, the Collegiate Church of Santa María and the rock carvings of Outeiro dos Lameiros; there are also beaches, a wetland and the Serra da Groba. If you are looking for a hotel in Baiona, these different highlights may help you decide: would you like to focus your stay on culture, views, the coast or the landscape?

Fortress, Peninsula and Views

The Fortress of Monterreal is located on the Monte Boi Peninsula, also known as Monterreal. The peninsula has been known as a fortified site for more than 2,000 years. The Torre del Reloj, Torre de la Tenaza and Torre del Príncipe have been preserved within the fortress. From the fortress, views stretch across the estuary, the Cíes Islands and the coastline along which Baiona lies. Here, the architecture and landscape offer distinct vantage points side by side: the towers evoke the history of the site, while the view takes in the water and coastline.

The Paseo de Monte Boi also provides a route to follow and another point of reference. It is almost two kilometres long and circles much of the base of the fortress. This describes the length of the route, not the time it takes to walk. At the Virgen de la Roca, a spiral staircase leads to the boat held by the figure. The boat serves as a viewpoint over the Atlantic Ocean and has room for five people. The two viewpoints offer different experiences: one looks out from the fortress over the estuary, islands and coast; the other is from the boat held by the Virgen de la Roca.

Building History and Rock Carvings

The Collegiate Church of Santa María dates from the 13th century. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements with a Gothic structure. These terms describe distinct art-historical influences that come together in this building. Outeiro dos Lameiros offers a very different perspective on time: the site includes more than 20 rocks bearing human-made carvings dating back approximately 4,000 years. The contrast between these periods highlights the diversity of Baiona’s cultural history—from prehistoric carvings and the medieval church to the history of the fortress.

Beaches and Nature Around Baiona

Baiona has six beaches integrated into the town centre. Their combined shoreline measures 3,860 linear metres; conditions at individual beaches can vary by season. Ladeira is the longest beach in the municipality. Its features include regenerating dunes and the large Punta da Foz sandspit. The beach is part of the estuary protected by the Natura 2000 network. These details set Ladeira apart as an individual beach landscape from the overview of the six beaches close to town.

The Esteiro da Foz wetland adds another distinctive natural feature. It provides a habitat for otters, reptiles, amphibians and more than 100 bird species. The Serra da Groba lies in the south of the municipality and extends across several municipalities. At Alto da Gabiñeira, it reaches an elevation of more than 630 metres. The Serra is suitable for hiking, sports and other leisure activities. Baiona therefore offers a range of landscapes: the shoreline and protected estuary, the wetland and its wildlife, and the higher-elevation mountain landscape.

Festa da Arribada

During the Festa da Arribada, Baiona’s harbour and old town become an open-air market with stalls selling food and handmade products. The squares host live demonstrations of traditional crafts, live medieval music, and performances by troubadours, falconers, comedians and jugglers. The festival is designated an event of international tourist interest. The programme may vary, and dates can also shift slightly depending on the calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa da Arribada, check the event date in advance.
