Get to know Codeseda through its specific hiking trails, riverside landscapes and architectural history. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Codeseda, you can decide whether hiking, scenery or cultural history should take center stage. The PR-G 197, the waterfalls and the historic buildings each offer a different focus.

Hiking the PR-G 197 and the Camino

The PR-G 197 is a 30.30-kilometer circular trail. It runs mainly through the parishes of San Xurxo de Codeseda and San Lourenzo de Sabucedo in the municipality of A Estrada. Its landscapes include riverside areas, native forests and mid-mountain terrain. These are also habitats for the wild horses that take part in the Rapa das Bestas of Sabucedo.

The circular trail can be divided into two stages of 13 and 17 kilometers. There is also an alternative route that starts in A Grela and descends to Codeseda. This means the suggested stages for the circular trail differ from the alternative route, which has its own starting point. Route details can change, so check the latest municipal information before setting out.

A 32-kilometer section of the Camino de Santiago de la Geira Romana y de los Arrieros passes through the municipality of A Estrada. Its final two stages lead to Codeseda and the town of A Estrada, where all services are available. When planning, keep in mind what each distance refers to: the 32 kilometers describe the section within the municipality, while the 30.30 kilometers for the PR-G 197 refer to the length of the circular trail.

Rivers and waterfalls

Fervenza de Insuela is in the parish of Codeseda. It includes one waterfall and others farther downstream. The Umia River crosses the parish for about six kilometers. These details describe different aspects of the landscape: a series of waterfalls at a specific location and a stretch of river whose length is approximate.

Church, history and cultural landscape

The Church of San Xurxo de Codeseda has a pentagonal apse and a rib-vaulted chancel. It also has a straight section with a barrel vault. The capitals feature plant decoration influenced by Santiago de Compostela. The church’s layout, vaulting and ornamentation can therefore be considered as distinct architectural features.

Its history includes two events separated in time: in 1124, King Alfonso VII transferred Codeseda to Munio Pérez Tacón. Thirty years later, the church appears in a record by Pope Anastasius IV as a nunnery. The transfer concerns Codeseda, while the later record refers to the church. The Cruceiro da Feira in Codeseda adds a specific historical marker: it dates from the late 18th century.

At present, 42 groups of mills have been identified in connection with Codeseda; many are in ruins, and their condition may change. Three groups lie within the territory of the neighboring parish of Sabucedo, near the parish boundary. They are included because they belong to residents of Vilaboa. The total therefore also includes these three groups outside the parish of Codeseda.
