Vilagarcia De Arousa brings together coastal landscapes, historic routes, railway history and culinary traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these different themes can help with your planning: each beach has its own landscape features, cultural routes lead through the town’s history, and festivals are tied to specific dates or programs that change from year to year.

Beaches with Different Landscapes

Playa Compostela is an urban beach. At one end it borders Carril, and at the other it connects with Playa de A Concha. Together, the two form a sandy beach more than 3 kilometers long. Playa de A Concha also has a long bathing tradition associated with the former La Concha de Arousa spa, which operated from 1886 until the 1960s.

Playa de O Preguntoiro has a different character: the crescent-shaped sandy beach has moderate waves and is sheltered from the winds. At the mouth of the Ulla River is Playa de O Campanario-Bamio. It is a quiet beach in a river-shaped landscape where seawater flows in. The beach lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Vilagarcia De Arousa and Catoira. The details about shape, waves and landscape each offer a different perspective when comparing beach locations.

Cultural Routes and Railway Heritage

The Ruta HistĂłrica passes through the streets and squares of Vilagarcia De Arousa. Its stops include archaeological remains, a pazo, a monastery and a church classified as a National Monument. Castro de Alobre is considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The route therefore covers a range of history, from archaeological traces to the buildings it includes.

The Ruta del Padre Sarmiento also passes through Vilagarcia De Arousa. It is a stage of a coastal pilgrimage route that begins in Pontevedra, runs to Padrón and joins the Portuguese Way to Compostela there. MUFEVI offers another link to transport history: the museum is housed in the former railway station, which became the terminus of Galicia’s first railway line, the Cornes–Carril line, in 1873. Scale models and interactive games present the railway heritage.

Vilagarcia De Arousa is also connected to Galicia’s most heavily used railway line, which links A Coruña and Vigo. Check the timetable for your specific journey.

Shellfish Gathering, Festivals and Routes on the Water

On the Ruta de marisqueo in Carril, visitors can gather clams and cockles with local shellfish gatherers. They learn about harvesting methods and the marketing process. Participating providers and booking arrangements may vary.

The La Almeja de Carril celebration includes a public tasting of thousands of portions of clams in marinade sauce, accompanied by Albariño from a local winery. The program of this recurring celebration may vary from year to year. The Fiesta del Agua in Vilagarcia De Arousa takes place every year on August 16. The town’s patron saint festivals were recognized as Festivals of National Tourist Interest in 2006.

There is no regular daily transport to Cortegada. Shipping companies offer organized visits mainly from Vilagarcia De Arousa and Carril; check in advance which dates are available. On the island, there is a self-guided circular route, “Un paseo por Cortegada: la medicina del mar,” which explores its natural and cultural diversity.

The Ruta Fluvial Xacobea del Mar de Arousa y RĂo Ulla was also founded in Vilagarcia De Arousa. You can follow the route by catamaran; it passes the Torres de Oeste. As boat availability may vary, it is advisable to check travel options in advance.

Gardens and Landscaped Grounds

The garden at Pazo de Rubianes has a geometric, maze-like design, with a particular focus on camellias. It received the Camelia de Oro and Camelia de Plata awards at several editions of the International Exhibition Fair. The gardens, estate and woodland of Rubiáns cover a total of 40 hectares.
