Peaks rising more than 1,500 metres in the Sierra Espuña, coastal lagoons and the Roman Theatre of Cartagena showcase the diversity of the Región de Murcia. Nature, archaeological history and long-standing traditions offer a range of ways to tailor your trip to your interests.

Mountains and protected habitats

The Sierra Espuña Regional Park lies in the heart of the Región de Murcia. The mountain massif, composed mainly of limestone, rises to more than 1,500 metres, with karst formations shaping its peaks. Forestry tracks and a signposted network of natural trails give walkers access to large parts of the range. You can explore the landscape along marked trails and learn about the massif’s distinctive geology at the same time.

The Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila Regional Park encompasses 17 priority habitat types, including coastal lagoons and steppe-like grasslands. Calblanque is also designated as a regional park and a Site of Community Importance. When visiting, stay on the permitted paths: taking shortcuts damages flora, fauna and soil. Check the latest access guidance before your visit.

Roman history and regional traditions

The Roman Theatre of Cartagena was built towards the end of the 1st century BC under Emperor Augustus and could seat around 6,000 spectators. Its approximate capacity gives a sense of the scale of the auditorium. The complex includes the Museum of the Roman Theatre in the Palacio de Riquelme, the Church of Santa María la Vieja and the theatre itself.

Los Caballos del Vino in Caravaca brings together horses wearing elaborate capes embroidered with silk and gold, processions through the streets and a timed race up the steep climb to the town’s castle. The Sanctuary of Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz can celebrate a Holy Year every seven years on a permanent basis. Three certified wine routes offer another way to explore the region: Bullas, Yecla and Jumilla.

Waterscapes and wildlife watching

The Cabo de Palos–Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve features extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows and numerous historic shipwrecks. At Las Encañizadas, other aspects of the waterscape come together: the shallow-water area forms a natural connection between the Mar Menor lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea, and traditional fishing is practised there.

The Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park has marked walking trails and a cycling path with information panels. Viewing points let you observe waterbirds at close range. As individual facilities may change, check the latest information about paths and viewing points before your visit.
