Canteras: Quarries, Water Engineering and Festive Traditions
Accommodation in Canteras
Canteras brings together several facets of local history: the Canteras Romanas, traces of water collection, a grain mill, and religious traditions and feast days. If you also choose a travel destination based on culture and history, these different themes can help guide you. They range from a landscape shaped by erosion to celebrations held during a clearly defined period.
Canteras Romanas: Quarries and Geology
The Canteras Romanas form an archaeological complex of sandstone quarries, also known as tabaire quarries. In 1993, they were designated a Property of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of “Historic Site.” Erosion has shaped this area into a particularly attractive landscape of great geological interest. Quarrying and geological development thus offer two perspectives on the same complex. If you are interested in cultural heritage and geology, this place brings both themes together.
Water, Washhouse and Mill
At the Los DĂaz de Canteras artesian well is a washhouse built from sandstone from the Roman quarries. The well and washhouse were completely restored in 2022 at the residents’ request. A mural at the well depicts women washing clothes and recalls the site’s former use. The building material and the mural’s subject thus connect architectural history with a memory of everyday life in the past.
The Depósito de Aguas del Inglés is part of a water collection network created in the 19th century to alleviate the severe drought in Cartagena; it is located on Loma de Odón. One of the grain mills built in the second half of the 19th century now stands on this hill. The Depósito represents the history of water collection, while the mill draws attention to grain processing. Together, these structures offer different perspectives on local technological history.
Chapel and Local Festive Traditions
The Ermita Virgen del Carmen-Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is located in the village of Canteras. It was rebuilt in 1957 and is now a parish church. The building’s history of reconstruction is thus connected with its present-day religious function.
The patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Soledad take place from late July to mid-August. The program includes a tournament of Cartagena-style skittles, an evening of trovera poetry, a futsal championship, games, food and musical performances. The Cruces celebrations in Canteras feature live performances, dancing and food, as well as the traditional rebujito.
Weighing Up Interests and Travel Dates
When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish the thematic focus from the timing of your visit: the quarries, water engineering and mill offer different cultural and historical perspectives, while the patron saint festivities, held from late July to mid-August, provide a specific seasonal connection. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with these festivities, check the exact event dates in advance.
