El Sabinar: Nature, History and Festival Traditions
Accommodation in El Sabinar
You can get to know El Sabinar through its landscape, architectural and local history, and religious traditions. These themes give your stay different focuses: you can explore the karst landscape and junipers, learn about the Ermita de San Bartolomé and the history of the town, or plan your trip around one of its recurring festival traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in El Sabinar, distinguishing between these options can help you first decide on the purpose and preferred pace of your trip.
Landscape, Junipers and Routes
The landscape of El Sabinar combines plains where wheat or barley is grown with rocky cliffs and rock shelters. Traces of rock paintings can be seen in these shelters. The karst landscapes of the Calares de la Santa are also among the area’s natural features. El Sabinar’s landscapes are also home to several centuries-old Spanish junipers, which have been declared a World Heritage Site. The town’s name refers to the sabina, a type of tree that was very common in the land of the ancient Sabines.
Animals found in the landscapes around El Sabinar include mountain goats, falcons, eagle owls, eagles and choughs. The area’s natural character encompasses both distinctive landforms and its plant and animal life. If you are interested in the connection between fields and junipers, you can follow a marked circular route on the GR 7. It runs along the southern side of Cerro del Castellar, between fields and monumental junipers, as far as the Calar de la Santa.
For planning a drive, there is also the “Ruta 1: Pequeños Núcleos de Población Moratalla”. It is designated as an easy, 45-kilometre one-way route and runs from Moratalla via Bejar, Campo de San Juan, El Sabinar and Calar de la Santa to Benizar. This places El Sabinar as a stop on a named route through several places. The drive and the circular route on the GR 7 offer different ways to explore the landscape: one follows a route between several places, while the other is a walk along a marked circular trail.
Architectural History and Cultural Heritage
The Ermita de San Bartolomé dates from the 18th century. The rectangular, single-nave building has a gabled roof and retains Baroque-era structures. Its floor plan, architectural form and surviving Baroque features provide a clear starting point if you would like to explore El Sabinar from a cultural and historical perspective.
Another trace of local history is the Tercia, a grain silo built in El Sabinar in the Early Modern period. It reflects the town’s importance to the Encomienda de Santiago. Alongside the hermitage, whose construction dates to the Baroque period, the Tercia points to another historical role of El Sabinar. Together with the rock paintings in the shelters, these places and features offer different ways to explore the area’s history and cultural landscape.
Fiestas and RomerĂa
The annual Fiestas en El Sabinar in honour of the patron saint San Bartolomé are scheduled for 20 to 26 August. On one of the festival evenings, San Bartolomé and the Virgen de la Rogativa are carried together in a procession. If you are planning your trip around these festival days, check the current programme in advance so you can include the procession evening in your plans.
Another religious tradition is the annual RomerĂa of the Santuario de la Rogativa. It includes a journey lasting several days, during which the image from the sanctuary spends the night in El Sabinar. For planning purposes, the main difference between the two traditions is their time frame: the Fiestas have a specified period in August, while the RomerĂa is defined by the multi-day journey and the overnight stay of the image.
The festival days provide a specific time frame; the named routes, the Ermita and the Tercia offer other points of interest for planning your trip.
