Los Alcázares has seven kilometres of beaches on the Mar Menor. The Paseo Marítimo de Los Alcázares stretches for approximately 5.5 kilometres as a seafront promenade. These figures describe different measurements: the length of the beaches and the approximate length of the promenade. This distinction can help you plan your trip, depending on whether you want to focus primarily on stretches of beach or the seafront promenade.

Beaches, Seafront and Nature

The Balneario Playa de la Concha is a historic wooden platform over the sea. Today, it serves as a place to stroll and as a viewpoint overlooking the coast of Los Alcázares and the Mar Menor. At Playa del Espejo, two monuments commemorate different aspects of the region: the Monumento al Pescador is dedicated to the people of the Mar Menor and the fishing tradition that has shaped the area for generations. The Monumento al Huertano recalls the agricultural roots and folk culture of the Región de Murcia.

Playa de La Hita, between Santiago de la Ribera and Los Alcázares, offers a different focus. The area is a bird sanctuary designated as a ZEPA by the European Union. Its landscape includes former salt pans, rich coastal vegetation and small wetlands. Among other species, resident black-winged stilts and little terns can be observed there. This means the coast offers not only beaches and a seafront promenade, but also a protected natural area with opportunities for birdwatching.

Water Sports and Events

At the Estación Náutica in Los Alcázares, activities such as sailing, windsurfing and kayaking are available year-round. The Club Náutico Mar Menor also offers rentals and courses for sailing small sailboats, as well as kayak routes. If you are planning to use any of these services, check availability before your trip. This helps distinguish between a broad range of nautical activities and the specific courses, rentals and routes listed here.

Events may also be worth considering when choosing your travel dates. Gastromar takes place every October and combines a food market with tastings and live cooking demonstrations. If you would like to include the event in your plans, check the specific event dates in advance. The Incursiones Berberiscas is a historical festival in which pirate raids on the coast of the Mar Menor in the 16th and 17th centuries are reenacted. The performances take place on the beach and in the town centre.

Aviation History and Cultural Heritage

The Museo Aeronáutico Municipal displays aircraft models, aerial photographs, military equipment and objects connected with the history of the Base Aérea de Los Alcázares in Spanish military aviation. Check access arrangements in advance if you plan to visit. The Aeródromo de Los Alcázares is also part of the town’s aviation history: it was Spain’s first seaplane base. The first flight of a military seaplane took place there in December 1915.

The Museo Internacional del Mar Menor comprises around 250 works of urban art and murals, distributed throughout the municipality and open for visitors to view. The Balsas Romanas de Los Diegos preserve the remains of a Roman settlement in Los Narejos dating from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century AD. They are also the remains of an industrial complex that probably belonged to a Roman villa and may have been connected with the processing and preservation of food.

The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción also reflects a longer building history: it was begun on the site of a small oratory that had existed since 1890. Construction started in 1898; the church was completed as a modest chapel in 1905. The Torre del Rame was built at the end of the 16th century as a defensive tower to protect the lands of Hoya Morena and El Ramí from frequent raids by Berber pirates.

Aljibe Colorao is part of a cistern system known since the Middle Ages, used, among other things, by travellers passing through and to water livestock during transhumance. Together with the Roman remains, the church, the tower and the aviation sites, it offers a way to explore different historical layers of the area without conflating their respective periods and themes.
