Los Nietos offers three distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the urban beach Playa Los Nietos El Arenal, Iberian archaeology, and maritime tradition. If you’re looking for hotels in Los Nietos, you can consider which focus best suits your stay. The following features of the area range from beach services that vary seasonally to an Iberian settlement with a long history of use.

City Beach and Practical Information

Playa Los Nietos El Arenal is an urban beach. Pedal boats can be rented there, and there are also diving facilities and a diving school. The availability of pedal boats and diving services may vary seasonally. So check in advance which services are available during your travel dates.

In the beach area of Los Nietos, there are bus and FEVE stops in the nearby residential developments. If you’re including the bus or FEVE in your travel plans, check local information before setting out, as stop information may change.

Los Nietos marina, Puerto deportivo de Los Nietos, has toilets, showers, parking, a slipway, and a restaurant. Individual facilities may change; check the latest information before your visit if needed.

Iberian Heritage in Los Nietos

The Necrópolis Ibérica de los Nietos is the only Iberian settlement and necropolis discovered on the coast of the Region of Murcia. Excavations at the necropolis associated with the settlement uncovered more than 200 cremation burials. The first phase of the settlement dates to the end of the 5th century BC; it remained in use until the beginning of the 2nd century BC. The number of graves refers to the necropolis, while the time span refers to the settlement—two different aspects of the site.

Los Nietos Viejos II is an open-air Iberian sanctuary dated to between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. Finds from Los Nietos can also be seen at the Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Cartagena – Enrique Escudero de Castro: a double-bodied vessel from the 4th century BC, as well as Iberian and Greek ceramics from the settlement of Los Nietos on the Mar Menor in Cartagena, also from the 4th century BC. These named objects complement the settlement’s dates with specific examples of its material culture.

Maritime Tradition and Fishing History

A maritime procession is traditionally held in Los Nietos for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. In 2025, the procession went through the streets of Los Nietos to the Club Náutico, where the maritime procession began. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the year you’re travelling.

The town’s fishing history was also the subject of the municipal project “Los Nietos en la memoria.” The project planned the production of a documentary about it. Alongside archaeological finds and the procession, Los Nietos’ historical story also includes its fishing history.
