Portman: Roman heritage, coast and nature
Accommodation in Portman
When looking for a hotel in Portman, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Roman history, the coast, or nature and trails. Portman offers a range of points of interest, from archaeological heritage to beach and hiking landscapes.
Roman history and architecture
The Portmán Archaeological Museum displays Roman remains, mosaics and stucco paintings from excavations at the Roman villa of Huerta del Paturro. The Roman villa of Huerto del Tío Paturro is considered one of the most significant Roman villas in the Region of Murcia because of its location, size, terraced layout and state of preservation. Archaeological finds show that it was inhabited from the 1st century AD to the first half of the 3rd century AD.
The Portmán lighthouse is also part of the protected cultural heritage: it is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and is included in Spain’s catalogue of lighthouses of heritage value. The modernist Casa Zapata, also known as Casa Grande, is likewise protected as a BIC. It belonged to the mining entrepreneur Miguel Zapata, known as El Tío Lobo, and was extended with a second storey in 1913 by Víctor Beltrí.
Historic mooring points have been preserved at the former fishermen’s pier. In the upper part of the former fishing port, the Mirador del Puerto de Pescadores offers views over Portmán Bay. As access and surroundings may change, check the current conditions at the viewpoint before visiting.
Theater festival in Portmán
The Portmán National Theater Festival has been held annually in early July since 2000. It is organized by Portmán Teatro and takes place at the headquarters of the Liga de Vecinos de Portmán. As dates and programs may vary, check the event details for your travel dates before your trip. This will help you see whether a festival visit might fit into your schedule without committing to a particular program.
Beaches and coastal landscape
Playa del Lastre is a natural Mediterranean beach. It is 180 meters long and an average of about 20 meters wide, with a surface of fine sand and gravel. The beach has beach bars, first aid and assistance services, foot showers, a garden, waste bins and a picnic area.
Access to Playa del Lastre includes reserved parking spaces, an access ramp and wooden walkways leading to the wet sand; amphibious chairs and amphibious crutches are also available. Coastal conditions, facilities and equipment may change. Check the current conditions at the beach before your visit.
Cala de la Cola del Caballo offers a different coastal view: its access path is 468 meters long, and the landscape combines a beach, cliffs, mountains and areas of rambla landscapes. The length refers to the access path; access conditions may change. Check current access information before your visit.
Nature and the region’s mining landscape
The PR-MU 2 hiking trail passes through Mediterranean woodland on Monte de las Cenizas. The area is home to natural stands of the Cartagena cypress (Tetraclinis articulata), considered unique on the European continent. The hiking trail thus brings together a particular plant species and a distinctive woodland landscape.
The Sierra Minera de Cartagena y La Unión offers another distinctly regional perspective: this protected landscape extends across Cartagena and La Unión. Abandoned mining facilities contrast with areas of high ecological value. The coastal stretch of Zone 9, Punta de Aguilones–Punta Negra de Portmán, features the high, rugged cliffs of the Sierra de la Fausilla and includes the beaches of Gorguel and Portmán.
Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila Regional Park lies between Cabo de Palos and Portmán. Together with PR-MU 2 and the Sierra Minera, its location illustrates how the natural and mining landscapes extend beyond the individual beaches.
