The Comunitat Valenciana reveals itself in many different ways: historic architecture, a cultural landscape shaped by irrigation, stories told during Las Fallas, and rice fields along a designated route. Traditional rice dishes are also part of the region’s identity. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering which of these aspects interests you most.

Palm groves and irrigation in Elche

The Palmeral of Elche comprises 67 groves with around 45,000 date palms across 144 hectares. It was established toward the end of the 10th century using elaborate irrigation systems, when the Muslim city of Elche was built. The ancient irrigation system is still in operation. The scale of the Palmeral and the continued use of this system give the landscape a distinctive agricultural dimension: cultivation, water management and the town’s historical development are all connected here. The Palmeral is also a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent.

La Lonja de la Seda: Late Gothic architecture

La Lonja de la Seda de Valencia was built between 1482 and 1533 and originally served the silk trade. A masterpiece of Late Gothic architecture, the building brings together a clearly dated history and a specific former function. Those interested in cultural heritage will find two useful points of reference here: the long construction period and the trade for which the Lonja was originally used. This sets the topic apart from the agricultural history of the Palmeral; both, however, offer a distinct perspective on the history of the Comunitat Valenciana.

Las Fallas and their ninots

Las Fallas are part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During Las Fallas, ninots—figures—tell short stories in different scenes, often relating to current issues. This gives cultural heritage a storytelling dimension: rather than looking only at a building or a landscape, visitors encounter depicted stories and references to contemporary life. If you’re interested in traditions, exploring these scenes is another way to get to know the region’s cultural heritage.

Rice fields, cultural routes and perspectives on the landscape

The Ruta Blava is a four-kilometre linear route from Port de Catarroja to Tancat de la Pipa, passing through rice fields. Its length and two endpoints provide a clear reference for planning; check the current reservation requirements before you travel. The summit of Penyagolosa is 1,814 metres high. While the Ruta Blava can be described by its course through rice fields, the defining feature of Penyagolosa is its elevation. These different connections to the landscape can help you identify your interests without treating the route and the summit as part of a single excursion.

Regional orientation and cuisine

The cultural routes of the Comunitat Valenciana connect visitors with the region’s heritage and history. For tourist information, assistance and guidance, the Comunitat Valenciana’s Tourist-Info network offers points of contact year-round; the availability of individual offices may vary. Traditional cuisine also offers a distinct way to experience the region, including wood-fired paella and rice dishes made with traditional ingredients.

Which focus suits your trip?

When planning, you can start by weighing the topics against one another: Are you more interested in the Lonja’s Late Gothic architecture and trading history, Elche’s irrigation landscape, the storytelling scenes of Las Fallas, or landscape features such as the Ruta Blava and Penyagolosa? These examples highlight different aspects and provide a concrete basis for organizing your travel interests.
