Chad: Discover rock art, lakes and national parks
Accommodation in Chad
In Chad, rock art, distinctive water systems and national parks are among the country’s notable travel attractions. The rock art of the Ennedi Massif, the Ounianga Lakes area, and Zakouma and Siniaka-Minia National Parks each offer a different focus.
Rock art and water landscapes
Thousands of images have been painted or carved onto rock surfaces in caves, canyons and rock shelters in the Ennedi Massif. Together, they form one of the Sahara’s largest rock art ensembles. The images are spread across different rock settings and were created using two techniques. For travelers interested in culture, Ennedi is a destination in its own right: its rock art can be considered a cultural attraction alongside the country’s natural areas, without any single motif representing all the rock art.
Water is also part of the character of the Ennedi Massif. Water is present year-round in its largest canyons. It plays a vital role in the ecosystem, sustaining plants, animals and human life. The combination of rocky landscapes and water describes another facet of the massif, in addition to its significance for rock art.
The Ounianga Lakes area offers a different focus. Its hydrological system, unique in the world, sustains the largest permanent freshwater lake system in the midst of a hyperarid environment. The lakes lie in a basin that was occupied by a much larger lake less than 10,000 years ago. The area figures distinguish the World Heritage property from its buffer zone: the World Heritage property covers 62,808 hectares, and the buffer zone 4,869 hectares.
National parks and wildlife
In Zakouma National Park, floodplains, rivers, swamps and pans are important resting and breeding grounds for migratory birds. These landscape features show that the park is about more than individual bodies of water: together, they provide important habitats for different stages of migratory birds’ stays. This gives travelers interested in bird habitats a clear natural history focus.
Siniaka-Minia National Park offers a different perspective. It covers 4,643 km² and lies among inselbergs and mountain formations. Its range of species includes Kordofan giraffes, buffalo, hartebeest, roan antelope, red-fronted gazelles, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, lions, leopards and greater kudus. This range of species is representative of the North Sudanian domain. As travel interests, Zakouma’s wetlands and floodplains with their migratory birds and, on the other hand, Siniaka-Minia’s landscape features and wide range of species are the main attractions.
Camp Dari: environmental education and seasonal planning
Camp Dari is located in Zakouma National Park and has been an environmental education center since 2018. In 2023, the camp welcomed a particularly large number of visitors: more than 6,800 people, nearly 80 percent of them students. The center combines its educational role with overnight accommodation: it has twelve traditional huts for overnight stays and an open main hall for social and educational gatherings. At the same time, Camp Dari can accommodate up to 100 people.
Accommodation and meals are free for educational visitors. Private guests from the region pay their own expenses at Camp Dari. These conditions apply to different groups of visitors and should be kept distinct when planning a stay.
Travel is subject to seasonal restrictions: during the dry season, from December to May, Camp Dari is accessible by road. During the rainy season, it closes because access is limited. Anyone considering Camp Dari as part of a trip should take this difference between the dry and rainy seasons into account when planning their dates.
