Brevard County combines protected natural areas with insights into spaceflight and regional history. The county park system preserves Florida’s natural features so visitors can experience and appreciate them. The experiences described range from hiking trails and wildlife watching to exhibits about rockets and spacecraft. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding which themes interest you most.

Nature and Outdoor Activities

Brevard County parks offer camping, horseback riding trails, fishing, boating and swimming; sailing, surfing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking are also among the options. The facilities available may vary from park to park. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge features a wide range of habitats: its 140,000 acres include coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, managed impoundments, scrubland, pine flatwoods and hardwood forests. These habitats provide a home for more than 1,500 plant and animal species, as well as 15 federally listed species.

Activities at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge include birdwatching, nature study and fishing; hunting is seasonal and regulated. Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge has a different focus. It stretches 20.5 miles between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach along Florida’s east coast, in Brevard and Indian River counties. The refuge protects habitats in the world’s most significant loggerhead sea turtle nesting area and North America’s most significant green sea turtle nesting area. Visitors can watch wildlife, fish, hike and learn about endangered and threatened wildlife. As the refuge’s visitor center, the Barrier Island Center focuses strongly on public education about sea turtles.

At Enchanted Forest Sanctuary, several miles of trails wind through the preserve; visitors can also watch wildlife and take nature photographs. The Management & Education Center introduces visitors of all ages and abilities to the preserve’s distinctive natural features. Trails and nature observation are complemented here by a facility that explains the natural environment.

Playalinda Beach in Brevard County is suitable for beach visits and wildlife watching, as well as for viewing rocket launches, depending on launch operations. From the first eight viewing areas, you can watch migratory birds, alligators and other species that live in the ponds. To reach the southern entrance to Canaveral National Seashore in Titusville, take Exit 220 from I-95 and follow Garden Street; it runs about 15 miles to the park entrance. Check the route before your trip.

Malabar Scrub Sanctuary covers 577 acres of dry xeric hammocks, scrubland, scrubby flatwoods, pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, ponds, swamp sloughs and depression marshes. It provides refuge for the Florida scrub-jay, gopher tortoise and eastern indigo snake. Crane Creek Sanctuary protects 16 acres of shoreline along Crane Creek in Melbourne. Access is only possible by kayak or canoe from Riverview Park on US Highway 1 in Melbourne.

Long Point Park is an 84.5-acre nature preserve and urban river park on an island in the Indian River Lagoon. It has waterfront campsites with access to fishing. Scout Island, part of Long Point Park, offers more than a mile of nature trails. These three details provide distinct points of reference: the landscape and character of the park, camping with fishing access, and a separate trail area.

Spaceflight and Regional History

Exhibits at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex cover rockets, spacecraft and space technology. Space Shuttle Atlantis is on permanent display there. The exhibit includes more than 60 interactive and immersive displays, offering an in-depth look at the shuttle, while other exhibits broaden the view to space technology and other spacecraft.

Historic Rossetter House Museum includes the James Wadsworth Rossetter House, built in 1908, and its gardens, the William R. Roesch House, built in 1901, and the Houston Family Memorial Cemetery, established in 1865. Rossetter House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The different construction and establishment dates give the museum complex a clearly distinguishable chronology.

Field Manor is a two-story, wood-frame structure built in 1880 and now known by this name. Guided tours take place every Saturday at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.; meet on the riverfront porch. Check the tour schedule before your visit. The visitor program also includes an afternoon tea with loose-leaf teas, savory foods, sweets and scones, along with a short museum tour. Reservations are required; the open-seating area can accommodate up to 14 people.

Downtown Cocoa Village offers a walking tour as a historic experience. The Leon and Jewel Collins Museum of African American History and Culture preserves African American history and culture, with a focus on the Black community in Cocoa, Florida. The area’s cultural history thus includes both a historic walking tour and a museum specifically focused on the community in Cocoa.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Brevard, you can decide on your main interest in advance: nature watching, spaceflight or regional history. For individual visits, be sure to plan for any specific conditions, such as the fact that Crane Creek Sanctuary can only be accessed by canoe or kayak, or the tour times at Field Manor.
