Hernando: Experience nature, water and history
Accommodation in Hernando
Hernando offers a variety of experiences, from extensive natural areas and water activities to historic sites. Weekiwachee Wildlife Management Area covers more than 2,800 acres in Hernando County. Dense hardwood swamps, freshwater and saltwater marshes, and pine-covered sandhills shape the landscape. These diverse habitats offer nature lovers several options to consider when planning a trip.
Natural Areas and Trails
The Withlacoochee River winds for 13 miles through Withlacoochee State Forest. The forest also offers miles of hiking trails. Another route option is the Withlacoochee State Trail: this paved rail-trail is 46 miles long, has numerous access points, and runs through Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties. The river, hiking trails and trail offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
Fishing is also a recreational option at Weekiwachee Wildlife Management Area, where it is permitted year-round. Visitors can collect scallops at Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve, subject to seasonal conditions. If you want to include both activities in your plans, note the difference between year-round fishing and seasonal scalloping.
Water Experiences and Activities
Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is located at the headwaters of the Weeki Wachee River. Underwater mermaid shows take place there daily. Check the schedule before your trip. The park also features a river cruise and Buccaneer Bay, Florida’s only spring-fed water park. Operating conditions can change, so check current operations before your visit.
Bayport Park and Linda Pedersen Park each have designated kayak and canoe launches, parking, restrooms and picnic areas. These parks provide convenient starting points for visitors planning a paddling trip. When choosing an activity, you can also consider whether a trip on the water or a hike through forest and marsh landscapes better suits your itinerary.
Historic Sites and Local Insights
The Richloam General Store was founded by Sidney Brinson on June 28, 1922. Until January 31, 1936, it served the Richloam community as an express office, post office and general store. These changing roles tell the story of a place where everyday shopping and a range of services came together.
The Hernando Historical Museum Association includes three museums: the May-Stringer House, the 1885 Train Depot and the Countryman One Room Schoolhouse. The four-story May-Stringer House dates from the Victorian era and has seven gables and 14 rooms. The 1885 Train Depot has remained in its original location since it was built. At Chinsegut Hill Historic Site, the mansion was built in 1845; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Together, these details offer different ways to explore architecture, building history and historic uses.
More Experiences and Choosing the Right Hotel
Motorsports enthusiasts can explore 60 acres at Lead Foot City in Brooksville. It offers an 1/8-mile drag strip with a fully concrete racing surface and a modern timing system, as well as burnouts, drift karts, car shows and live music. Offerings may change, so check what is happening during your trip before visiting. At Boyett’s Grove, visitors can watch a restored 1940s washing and packing machine process citrus fruit. The operation grows a wide variety of commercially cultivated citrus fruits in Hernando County.
First consider whether nature, water activities or historic sites are your priority, then compare the location of a specific hotel with the places on your itinerary.
