Manatee offers a variety of ways to experience the coast, nature and history: white-sand beaches, river landscapes and protected areas with diverse habitats sit alongside museums and historic buildings. You can tailor your trip to the experiences that interest you most.

Coast and Water

Along the Gulf shores of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, Manatee County has 27 miles of white-sand beaches. The Manatee River offers something different: it’s suited to fishing, birdwatching and watersports. The coast and river provide different ways to spend time by the water.

On Anna Maria Island, a free north-south trolley connects the three cities of Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach. If you’d like to include it in your travel plans, check the service information before your trip.

Nature Preserves and Their Habitats

Robinson Preserve covers more than 600 acres of mangroves, salt marshes, tidal creeks and coastal wetlands. Its network of trails is suitable for hiking, biking and paddling. The Blueway Trails include more than three miles of internal waterways. If you’re planning a trip on the water, keep in mind that water conditions can vary.

At Emerson Point Preserve, on the western end of Snead Island, visitors can explore hiking and kayaking trails and experience Florida’s wildlife and coastal habitats. Duette Preserve offers a different landscape: it encompasses the headwaters of the Manatee River and protects pine flatwoods, hardwood swamps, xeric oak scrub, basin marshes and dry grasslands.

Except on hunting weekends, Duette Preserve’s entrance gates are open daily from sunrise to sunset for pedestrians, cyclists and horseback riders. Hunting-related closures may change, so check the latest notices before your visit.

Rye Preserve also combines trails with distinctive habitats. Its network of trails passes through pine flatwoods, xeric oak scrub, oak hammocks and a riverine community. The preserve is also home to the rare gopher tortoise, though sightings aren’t guaranteed. As a historic landmark, the Rye Family Cemetery can be visited; it is considered the last remaining trace of the former community along the Rye River.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Bishop offers a perspective that spans nature and Florida’s history. The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature explores that history from prehistoric origins to the present day. The museum also features a planetarium with an immersive experience in a 50-foot domed theater. The Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat is home to manatees rescued from the wild after illness or injury. The manatees living there at any given time may vary.

The Florida Maritime Museum’s galleries feature exhibits on maritime navigation, boatbuilding, the history of the museum building, and the Captain Blake Banks Sea Shell and Sea Life Collection. The maritime theme brings together practical craft traditions, the building’s history and a collection devoted to shells and marine life.

Manatee Village Historical Park presents 15 sites related to the history of Manatee County. Visitors can stroll through carefully preserved buildings and explore stories from 1840 to 1918. The park includes the oldest building, dating to 1860. The 1903 Wiggins General Store contains exhibits, while Fogarty Boat Works features original tools and equipment.

Gamble Plantation Historic State Park offers another historical perspective. Its mansion is the only surviving antebellum plantation house in South Florida. The building dates to the pre-Civil War era, served as the residence of Major Robert Gamble and was the headquarters of an extensive sugar plantation.
