Waterways, open prairie, and history give a trip to Okeechobee different focal points. You can combine a tour of Lake Okeechobee with nature watching or explore the region’s history. When choosing where to stay, it helps to first consider which of these themes will be the focus of your trip.

Waterways and Tours

The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail circles the lake for about 110 miles; more than half of the route is paved. Its length and surface provide different points of reference for planning. No fees or permits are required to use the trail. Check the details again before your trip.

The Okeechobee Waterway is a 154-mile waterway between Stuart on the Atlantic and Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico. It passes through Lake Okeechobee: west of the lake, the Caloosahatchee River is part of the waterway, and to the east, the St. Lucie Canal. This helps you understand the route by its two endpoints and different sections.

Boat ramps also vary in their facilities. The C. Scott Driver Recreation Area in Okeechobee County has two ramps, six lanes, and four docks; use is free. At Henry Creek Recreation Area in the same county, there is a free ramp with a gravel or dirt surface. Check the information again before heading out.

The Kissimmee River Public Use Area spans parts of Okeechobee County and is accessible mainly by boat via numerous ramps. Water levels and site status can affect conditions. Fishing is permitted year-round in the area; check the applicable licensing and regulatory requirements before fishing. Part of the Florida Trail also passes through it. If you plan to hike there, check trail conditions and access in advance.

Prairie, Cypress Trees, and Wildlife Watching

The Taylor Creek Stormwater Treatment Area in Okeechobee County has a stand of old cypress trees. Along with Grassy Island, it offers opportunities for cycling, hiking, bird and wildlife watching, and picnicking. Grassy Island also has horseback-riding trails and geocaching. Maintenance work may lead to temporary closures of recreational facilities.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park protects Florida’s largest remaining stretch of dry prairie. The park is also recognized as Florida’s first Dark Sky Park and is highlighted as a place for stargazing. Its distinctive landscape is appealing during the day, too: species you may spot there include Grasshopper Sparrows, Crested Caracaras, and Burrowing Owls. Viewing opportunities are seasonal, and sightings are not guaranteed.

Buckhead Ridge Marsh near the north shore of Lake Okeechobee is a good place to watch wetland birds. You can paddle on the Kissimmee River and look out for river wildlife; water conditions and the availability of outfitters may change. Wagon Wheel Horse Farm offers guided horseback rides. Confirm availability with the provider before your visit.

History in the Park, Museum, and Cityscape

The Battle of Okeechobee took place on Christmas Day in 1837. Okeechobee Battlefield Historic State Park is the site of a significant battle in the Second Seminole War. Historical battle reenactments are held there once a year, usually in February; the date may change. The Okeechobee Main Street mural program depicts the same battle and its date. This way, you can encounter the historic event both at an annual event and through public art.

The Okeechobee Historical Society Museum and Schoolhouse includes a schoolhouse dating from 1907. A collection of historic sites can also be found along Park Street in Okeechobee, from NW Park Street to SW Park Street. Individual shops and exhibits may change. These different stops offer their own perspectives: the schoolhouse points to the history of education, while the murals and historic sites offer other ways to explore the past.

When planning your trip, you can weigh the approximate length of the lake trail, the waterways, nature watching, and historical themes as different focal points. For some itineraries, activities on the water take center stage; for others, the dry prairie, birds, or the history surrounding the Battle of Okeechobee are key. For fishing, hiking, horseback rides, and events scheduled for specific dates, it is a good idea to check the relevant conditions or dates in advance.
