The American operator of casino - Harrah's Entertainment Inc.- expressed its interest in participation in the construction of a large-scale gaming and hotel complex in Slovakia. Harrah's ready to be an operator of casinos in the new complex, construction of which is expected to begin in 2010.
Protocol of intent between Harrah's Entertainment Inc and the Hungarian project developer TriGranit Company was signed this week. U.S. gaming giant intends to participate in the management of hotels and casinos of the future hotel and entertainment complex "Metropolis", which is planned to be built in the vicinity of Bratislava, near the highways leading to Vienna, Budapest and Prague.
According to preliminary agreements, Harrah's Entertainment Inc will invest about 50 million dollars in the development of "Metropolis".
Before the announcement of the intention to cooperate with future gambling resort in Slovakia, Harrah's Company has been known for several attempts to enter the gaming market in Eastern Europe. Among the countries in which Harrah's intended to open its casino, Slovenia was listed as well. But with the onset of the crisis, plans to open a casino in this Balkan country were forced to be postponed.
The future gaming center in Slovakia, according to Harrah's, has a great potential. Convenient geographical location, as well as lack of large game zones in Eastern Europe, gives an opportunity to assume that "Metropolis" will become an analogue of Las Vegas for the region. Such rosy prospects are supported by recent developments in Russia - a country which is the largest provider of tourist traffic in the former Soviet bloc. As is known, in 2009 in Moscow and other large cities of Russia all casinos have been closed. Taken the fact that Russia has not yet opened a single major gambling center into account, the Metropolis project promises to be a kind of monopoly on gambling resorts, at least in the first year or two after opening.
Besides Russian tourist, the gambling center in Slovakia will be most likely popular among the tourists from Austria, Italy, Norway and Germany.
"Metropolis" - this is entertainment and commercial complex, which will be built on the outskirts of Bratislava. According to the preliminary draft, on an area of 30 hectares, in addition to the casino, aqua park, theme park, hotels, golf courses, as well as centers for negotiations and conference rooms will be located. The project cost is estimated at 1.5 billion euros. When "Metropolis" project will be accomplished it will create 10 thousand new jobs.
