Sal Rei combines culture in town with landscape destinations nearby. The Museu dos Naufragos, murals in the streets and Praia Diante, known for its sunset views, each offer a different focus. Djeu adds to the picture as an uninhabited nearby island. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to first consider whether culture, street art, or island and coastal landscapes should be the focus of your trip planning.

Culture in Sal Rei

The permanent exhibition at the Museu dos Naufragos covers three themes: the history and culture of the islands of Cabo Verde, the universal language of art, and a shipwreck survivor’s journey to safety. A broad view of the islands sits alongside a specific story, while art is also a subject in its own right within the exhibition.

The building itself is also distinctively described: it was built entirely from local white limestone and volcanic rock. Mosaics, stained-glass windows, paintings and sculptures illustrate the history of the islands of Cabo Verde inside. The permanent exhibition also includes relics from historic shipwrecks off the coast of Boa Vista, as well as objects from the period of pirate attacks and the slave trade to the Americas.

The streets of Sal Rei are decorated with murals. Since public art can change over time, it is worth getting a current impression on site. Another cultural attraction on Boa Vista is the pottery school in Rabil: it was established in 1960 and preserves traditional clay-shaping techniques developed by local craftspeople.

Djeu and the coastal landscape

The uninhabited island of Djeu lies about one kilometer west of Sal Rei. It covers 89 hectares; its highest point is 27 meters above sea level. Djeu is designated a natural monument, and its western tip is called Ponta de Espuma. A narrow channel, 500 to 600 meters wide, separates the island from Boa Vista to the northeast.

The Ponta Espuma lighthouse was built in 1888 and is still in operation. If you plan to visit it, confirm its current operating status in advance. For a different coastal view, there is Praia Diante in Sal Rei, known for its sunset views.

Activities with different focuses

The Sal Rei Bay tour includes a stop at Djeu Beach for swimming and snorkeling. If you include this tour in your plans, check the current tour details in advance. This makes it possible to treat the described time at the beach as a separate activity, without confusing it with fishing tour options.

Fishing tours depart from Sal Rei. Possible departure times are listed as 8 a.m. to noon or 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Departure and operating details may change; confirm them directly with the provider before your trip.

More landscapes on Boa Vista

Boa Vista has other landscapes that add to the regional picture. The Viana Desert on Boa Vista is about one kilometer wide and around five kilometers long; its light-colored sand is mixed with grains of black earth. Visitors can walk there freely and without difficulty; follow local guidance when visiting. In the Morro de Areia nature reserve on Boa Vista, sand dunes extend to the ocean. Praia de Santa Mónica lies in the southwest of Boa Vista and is more than eleven kilometers long.
