Praia can be explored through its coastline, city history and cultural aspects of everyday life. In the south are two beaches with clearly distinguishable features; in the historic center of Plateau, a presidential palace and an ethnographic museum represent other sides of the city. Markets add another distinct theme to the picture of Praia.

Beaches in the south of Praia

Quebra Canela lies in the south of the city of Praia and is a sheltered beach about 450 meters long, with white sand and clear water. Gamboa Beach is also in the south and is part of Baía do Porto da Praia. It is 1.2 kilometers long and consists mostly of white sand. Their different lengths offer a concrete comparison of the two stretches of coastline.

How the beaches are used adds to the landscape: Gamboa is used for landing fishing boats and for major events, including the Gamboa Festival. If an event is important to your plans, check the date in advance.

Museum and city history

The permanent exhibition at the Museu Etnográfico da Praia is devoted to traditional economic activities in Cabo Verde. These include agriculture, livestock farming, fishing and crafts, especially weaving, basketry and pottery. Traditional housing and cooking, music and toys are also featured. The topics thus range from work and crafts to everyday life and cultural expression.

A phonotheque and the storytelling corner “Stória, stória, furtuna di séu amén” expand the exhibition to include oral traditions. The collections include tales, stories and riddles gathered across all the islands of the archipelago since the 1990s. The phonotheque and storytelling corner give this heritage its own place alongside the exhibitions on work and everyday life. Check current opening hours before your visit.

The Palácio da Presidência da República is located in the historic center of Plateau. A municipal tourism inventory from 2015 dates its construction to the end of the 19th century and notes that it was still serving as the presidential palace of Cabo Verde at that time. Thus, the historic center brings together a cultural museum and a building with a political function, representing different aspects of the city’s history.

Markets in Praia

Feira de Sucupira is considered a typical African market with a wide range of goods. It complements the beach and museum themes with another glimpse of Praia.

Cabo Verde in a broader context

Looking at the wider destination of Cabo Verde takes you beyond Praia. The archipelago consists of ten islands, nine of which are inhabited. The eastern islands are characterized as older, flat and sandy; the western ones as newer, mountainous, rocky and irregularly shaped. This is a landscape contrast on a national scale.

Cabo Verdean cuisine includes cachupa, fish, seafood and fruit. Cachupa consists of meat or fish, stewed beans and corn, and is served with cooked vegetables, potatoes and boiled bananas. Music and literature are also part of the broader cultural context: literary and musical production reflects European and African cultural roots. Music and dance traditions associated with Cabo Verde include morna, funaná, batuque, mazurca and coladeira.
