Sao Filipe combines colorful buildings and elegant sobrados with a rich city history. The town is known as “Cidade dos Sobrados”; its architecture is associated with the former prosperity brought by the coffee and wine trade. Sobrados define the cityscape in the Historic Center.

Sobrados and Historic Landmarks

On March 16, 2016, the Historic Center was added to Cabo Verde’s UNESCO Tentative List under criteria IV and VI. One building also connects the cityscape with its history: the São Filipe Municipal Museum is housed in an old sobrado, built between 1880 and 1900 for Francisco do Sacramento Monteiro.

Fortim Carlota was built in 1667 with heavy artillery to defend against piracy. Casa da Memória houses a permanent exhibition of furniture and objects that recall the period from 1800 to 1950. This brings different historical periods into view: the defense history of the 17th century and objects from a later era.

Smart Tour and Festival Culture

The São Filipe Smart Tour starts at Praça das Bandeira. Along the pedestrian street Rua Alto São Pedro, you can stop as part of the route, get to know residents’ daily lives and buy local products; availability may vary. The stop connects the pedestrian street with glimpses of everyday life in the area.

You can access a digital platform with texts, audio recordings and photographs about places and monuments via QR code. The different formats offer different ways to explore the places described. Check the route details and QR-code platform before setting out.

In Sao Filipe, Bandeira de São João is considered the second most widely celebrated festival of its kind, after Nhu Sanfilipe. Volcanic Landscapes in Cape Verde

Pico do Fogo offers another perspective on the island. Its central cone, at 2,829 m, is the highest point on the island of Fogo. The historically active volcano last erupted on April 2, 1995. In Cape Verde, Fogo volcano is also considered the highest point in the archipelago and is active.

The history of the island of Fogo also goes back to the 15th century. Chã das Caldeiras is a volcanic valley at the foot of Pico do Fogo, surrounded by high lava walls. On Fogo, visitors can see the effects and changes resulting from a volcanic eruption, learn about the island’s history and geology, and visit its villages. This island perspective offers a different thematic focus from the historic architecture of Sao Filipe.
