Baía das Gatas offers several specific points to consider when planning your trip: a coastal landscape, stand-up paddleboarding, the history of a music festival and the redevelopment of the waterfront promenade. This gives you a way to understand the place through its surroundings, a possible activity and its development.

Location and Landscape

The small town is on São Vicente, east of Mindelo; its natural bay is its immediate coastal setting. Baía das Gatas beach has white sand, and mountains form the horizon behind it. Together, the bay, the character of the beach and the mountainous backdrop create a distinct landscape. This combination is not interchangeable: the beach describes the coastal area, the mountains the backdrop and the bay the natural setting. If you choose a destination based on its surroundings, you can weigh these features separately rather than focusing only on the general idea of a beach. The name also refers to the waters: Baía das Gatas is said to take its name from the shark species tubarão-gata, which is common there. The name's origin thus adds a reference to marine life to the visible coastal description.

Stand-up Paddleboarding

Baía das Gatas is a suitable place for stand-up paddleboarding. This adds a specific water sport to the landscape features. These are different criteria to consider when choosing: the beach, bay and mountain horizon define the setting, while stand-up paddleboarding appeals to a sporting interest. If you plan a trip around a particular activity, you can take this suitability into account alongside the landscape. This gives you a distinct activity to consider in addition to the coastal scenery.

Music History

The Festival Internacional de Música da Baía das Gatas held its first edition in Baía das Gatas in 1984. Unlike the name's origin, which refers to the shark species tubarão-gata, the festival establishes Baía das Gatas as the setting for a historic musical event. The first edition is therefore a specific cultural reference to the town.

Waterfront Promenade Redevelopment

As part of the waterfront promenade redevelopment, a 400,000 m² retention basin was built to prevent water from accumulating. A waterfront promenade, new commercial spaces, green areas, parking spaces and a children's playground were also created. The public lighting was completely renewed, with 75 new light poles and two kilometres of low-voltage cables. Each figure refers to a specific measure: 400,000 m² is the area of the retention basin; the 75 poles and two kilometres of cables are part of the renewed lighting. The works therefore addressed water accumulation as well as the design of public and commercial spaces and the renewal of technical infrastructure.

Beach Ramp

A wooden ramp for people with disabilities was inaugurated at Baía das Gatas beach. If you plan to use the ramp, check that it is currently accessible before your visit.
