History in the wider Tarrafal destination

In Chão Bom, three kilometres from Tarrafal town, a site played an important role in the struggle for freedom and democracy in Cabo Verde.

The Museu do Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal, also known as the Museu da Resistência, is located in Chão Bom. It is housed in the former Campo de Concentração do Tarrafal and preserves and conveys the collective memory of the peoples of Cabo Verde, Guinea, Angola and Portugal.

The historical heritage of the wider Tarrafal destination also includes the Farol da Ponta Preta in the Concelho do Tarrafal. Built towards the end of the 19th century, it historically served as a landmark for ships off Santiago’s north coast. While the museum preserves collective memory, the lighthouse recalls the maritime navigation of the past.
