Tarrafal De São Nicolau combines fishing history with beach themes and cultural connections in the municipality of the same name. When choosing where to stay, it is helpful to distinguish between locations: the Museu da Pesca and the beaches are associated with Tarrafal itself; the Sanjon celebrations and Casa da Morna Sodade also take you to Praia Branca.

Fishing History in Tarrafal

The Museu da Pesca in Tarrafal displays exhibits on whaling, historic fishing equipment and canned tuna. Its scope therefore extends from fishing at sea to the equipment and a processed product. These different themes can be seen as distinct aspects of fishing history and make the museum a tangible cultural landmark in the town.

Cabo Verde’s oldest cannery, which is still in operation, is located right next to the museum. If you are considering the cannery as a separate stop, check in advance whether visitors are allowed access.

Beaches and Natural Thalassotherapy

The beaches of Tarrafal are known for their iodine- and titanium-rich sand, which is credited with healing properties. Tarrafal is also considered a popular center for natural thalassotherapy for people with joint and bone problems. Sand and thalassotherapy together shape the town’s coastal appeal.

D’Boche de Rotcha beach lies in the wider area around Tarrafal, and its water is described as crystal clear. While Tarrafal’s beaches are characterized by their iodine- and titanium-rich sand, D’Boche de Rotcha stands out in the surrounding area for its water.

Sanjon and Morna in Praia Branca

Praia Branca is a village in the Concelho do Tarrafal, not Tarrafal itself. The Sanjon celebrations on São Nicolau are centered there. Traditionally, the Macela procession takes place on the 23rd: people carry bundles of the endemic plant on their heads. Harvesting it is now prohibited, so the fire is made from other materials. The day of festivities ends with a public dance. The sequence brings together the procession and dance with the tradition surrounding Macela. If you would like to include the celebrations in your travel plans, check the current event dates.

Casa da Morna Sodade is also in Praia Branca. It was established as part of an initiative to promote Morna; Praia Branca is also considered the birthplace of the Morna song “Sodade.” The cultural connection therefore extends beyond the festivities: alongside the traditional program of the Sanjon celebrations, Morna is also a focus in Praia Branca.

The two cultural connections complement one another: the Sanjon celebrations bring together a procession and public dance, while Casa da Morna Sodade is associated with an initiative to promote Morna. In this way, the municipality offers both a recurring program of festivities and a connection to the origins of “Sodade.”
