Bathurst: History and Agricultural Heritage
Accommodation in Bathurst
Bathurst brings together historic sites and the area’s agricultural history. The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn, St John’s Church and the Powder Magazine represent different historical points of interest; the Bathurst Agricultural Museum puts agricultural collections at the heart of its exhibits. The Big Pineapple lies just outside the town and adds another perspective on the region’s pineapple history. Bathurst therefore offers several distinct cultural and historical highlights to help you plan your trip.
Historic Buildings and Their Stories
The Historic Pig and Whistle Inn is a South African national monument and is home to the country’s oldest continuously licensed pub. The Powder Magazine is the oldest surviving building in Bathurst. These distinctions refer to different measures: for the Inn, it is the licensing history of a pub in a national comparison; for the Powder Magazine, it is a surviving building within Bathurst. The two claims therefore mark different historical points of interest.
St John’s Church was designed in 1829 by Major Charles Cornwallis Michell of the Royal Engineers. Here, the focus is on a named designer and a specific year of design. Together with the Inn and the Powder Magazine, the church adds its own clearly dated point of reference to the town’s history.
Agriculture and Technology
The Bathurst Agricultural Museum collection includes ox wagons, horse-drawn vehicles, agricultural implements and tractors, steam engines, dairy and household equipment, veterinary equipment, and ostrich incubators. Its range spans vehicles and tools, machinery, and equipment for domestic and veterinary use. Alongside agricultural work, it also covers various technical and everyday fields. Individual holdings may change.
The restored Bradshaw’s Mill houses a working waterwheel. This adds a specific technical feature that differs from the wide-ranging collection at the Agricultural Museum: here, the waterwheel is part of a mill, while the museum holds many different items.
The Big Pineapple Just Outside Bathurst
The Big Pineapple is located on Summerhill Farm, just outside Bathurst, so it is in the town’s surrounding area rather than in the town itself. The fruit-shaped building is 16.7 metres tall. It houses a museum and farm shop, and offers a view from its top floor. The building was erected by the local farming community to celebrate the area’s rich history of pineapple cultivation.
The building has different points of reference in its shape and purpose: its form evokes a pineapple, while its origins recall regional cultivation. If you plan to visit the Big Pineapple, check current visitor information in advance.
