Grootvlei, also known as Thaba-Kgwali, brings together nature and history in the wider area. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between locations: blue korhaans and blue cranes occur in the Grootvlei area, while historic school and church buildings are found, among other places, in Greylingstad and Nthoroane. This can help you decide whether nature observation or regional architectural history better suits your planned stay.

Birdwatching and Nature

Bird species found in the Grootvlei area include blue korhaans and blue cranes. A municipal planning document from 2021–2022 mentions opportunities for birdwatching and ecotourism activities in the areas where these species occur, as well as along the routes leading there. For travellers interested in birdlife and nature, these two species provide a specific point of focus, while the activities broaden the scope beyond simply observing species.

It is advisable to check local conditions if you plan to include any of these activities in your itinerary. This lets you take nature-related interests into account without treating the observation areas as if they were synonymous with the entire town.

History in the Wider Area

There are several historic points of interest in the wider area. Laerskool Greylingstad was built in 1902 and is described as the oldest school in the region. In Greylingstad, Sir Herbert Baker designed the N.G. Kerk in 1909; in Nthoroane, Gerald Moerdijk designed the Missionary Church. The history therefore ranges from schooling to two churches whose designs are associated with different architects and locations. When interpreting the dates, the distinction between the year of construction and the year of design is important: 1902 is the school’s construction year, while 1909 is the design year of the N.G. Kerk.

An official Heritage Day celebration by the Mpumalanga provincial government was scheduled for Wednesday, 24 September 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Skomplaas Sports Field in Grootvlei (Thaba-Kgwali); it has not been confirmed whether it took place or was held again.

History at the Municipal Level

At the level of Dipaleseng Municipality, there is another historical point of interest: the municipality lists Anglo-Boer War graves as an attraction. The history of the war thus adds another perspective to the themes of schooling and architecture. This reference belongs to the municipal context, while the Laerskool and the churches are each associated with specific locations in the wider area. This makes it possible to consider buildings and municipal history as distinct areas of interest.

Travel and Hotel Search

This distinction helps separate your choice of location from your interests: nature-related attractions are based in the Grootvlei area, the buildings mentioned are in other locations, and the graves are considered at the municipal level. First decide which connection matters to your trip, then search for hotels at your preferred destination.
