When planning a visit to Kwamhlanga, it is worth considering local, municipal and regional destinations separately. Nearby Kghodwana Cultural Village and Museum offers a direct introduction to Amandebele culture; other tourism listings relate to Thembisile-Hani Municipality. Gauteng provides a separate regional theme.

Culture in the Nearby Area

Kghodwana Cultural Village and Museum was established in November 1989 by the former KwaNdebele government to preserve and maintain the culture of South Africa’s isiNdebele-speaking people. The Village illustrates how Amandebele settlements developed over different periods. Cultural traditions and the development of settlement patterns are therefore at its heart.

Huts, paintings and artefacts illustrate Amandebele culture. The Village comprises 36 traditional huts in total, showing different settlement and ways of life. An educational tour explores the way of life of the Amandebele and Nguni and presents various arrangements of traditional huts. They are made from natural materials such as poplar wood, grass, ropes, thatch, clay and cow dung. If you are interested in cultural history and traditional building methods, the Village brings these themes to life. Check with the museum about current tour arrangements before your visit.

In the wider travel area, Kghodwana Cultural Village is also one of the stopovers for tourists on their way to Mpumalanga Province.

Destinations in Thembisile-Hani Municipality

Thembisile-Hani Municipality’s tourism inventory lists Zithabiseni Holiday Resort among the municipality’s tourist attractions. The 2024–2025 municipal plan offers another point of reference: it describes Mabusa Nature Reserve as needing restoration. If you are considering a visit, check its current status in advance.

The municipality’s tourism plan also identifies Loopspruit Winery in Schoongezicht as part of its main tourism hub. The site is east of the R568, between Kwamhlanga and Ekangala to the south. These destinations belong to the municipal context and should be distinguished from information about nearby Kghodwana Cultural Village.

Gauteng as a Separate Regional Theme

Cultural sites in Gauteng focus on a range of different themes. Constitution Hill in Johannesburg explores South Africa’s transition from colonialism and apartheid to democracy. Freedom Park commemorates chapters of the freedom struggle, from pre-colonial times to the fight against apartheid, and offers interactive exhibitions and guided tours. The Cradle of Humankind is Gauteng’s only World Heritage Site and encompasses 13 excavation sites recognised as national heritage sites. Maropeng is its official visitor centre. The Sterkfontein Caves are also part of this regional theme: the prehistoric hominid skull known as “Mrs Ples” was found there.

Gauteng also offers destinations focused on nature and outdoor activities. The malaria-free Dinokeng Game Reserve covers 19,000 hectares and is Gauteng’s only free-roaming Big Five game reserve. A 70-kilometre self-drive route complements activities such as guided game drives, horseback riding, hiking, quad biking and hot-air ballooning. More than 600 plant species grow in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. Around 240 bird species have also been recorded there, and a pair of Verreaux’s eagles breeds there.
