Olifantshoek: Town at the foot of the Langeberg
Accommodation in Olifantshoek
Olifantshoek is an agricultural town at the foot of the Langeberg. In addition to these local characteristics, the regional setting, the Witsand Nature Reserve to the south and a dated section of the town’s history can help guide your choice of destination. Depending on whether you prioritise location, nature or history, you will have different points of reference for your planning.
Town location and regional orientation
Olifantshoek is the only town at the foot of the Langeberg. Its location by the mountains and its agricultural character describe different aspects of the place: its geographical position and its urban character. Two game farms on the Namakwari Route are nearby. Olifantshoek is also one of the main centres of the Go! Ghaap Route. For regional orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the two route connections: the game farms are associated with the Namakwari Route, while Olifantshoek itself is one of the main centres of the Go! Ghaap Route. This makes it possible to accurately distinguish references to the town from those to its immediate surroundings. When choosing a destination, you can consider the town’s location, its agricultural character and its route connections as separate criteria.
Witsand Nature Reserve
The Witsand Nature Reserve lies 78 km south of Olifantshoek. This distance and direction place it as a distinct landscape feature outside the town. The reserve has golden and red sand dunes known as the “Roaring Sands of the Kalahari”. They reach up to 60 metres in height; this figure refers to a maximum. The dunes can therefore be described by their colour, name and maximum height, rather than only by a general impression of the landscape. The reserve has a bird hide offering opportunities for birdwatching and photography. This provides a second perspective on the surroundings: the dune landscape on the one hand, and birdwatching and photographic subjects at the hide on the other. If you include nature in your plans, you can weigh up which of these aspects best suits your interests.
A section of the town’s history
The town’s history provides another point of reference with a clearly defined timeframe. On 19 September 1914, the foundation stone of the first full-fledged church building in Olifantshoek was laid. The decision to demolish the old church building was made on 3 June 1961. The chronology thus distinguishes between the laying of a foundation stone and a later decision concerning the old building. If you would like to take local history into account alongside landscape and route connections, these two dates provide a precise timeframe.
The town is characterised by its location on the Langeberg and its agricultural character; the dunes, birdwatching and photography relate to Witsand. This allows you to treat your preferred place to stay and nature-related interests as separate aspects of your travel planning.
