Cape Town: Gardens, History and Architecture
Accommodation in Cape Town
For a stay in Cape Town, you can group attractions according to different interests. Kirstenbosch combines a garden walk with sweeping views; Bo-Kaap offers history and architecture, while guided tours, architecture and collections are the focus at the Castle of Good Hope. The Slave Lodge adds to the historical perspective on the city.
Garden Route and Views at Kirstenbosch
The Kirstenbosch Fynbos Walk leads over the highest points of the garden. Its views extend to the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and take in a panorama across the suburbs of Cape Town to the Cape Flats and the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The route thus combines a garden walk with far-reaching views. If you want to focus on a garden walk and the views, this trail brings both interests together.
Free parking is available at Gates 1, 2 and 3 of Kirstenbosch. Check the garden’s latest information before you travel, as visitor information can change. The entrance gates, restaurants, shops and venues are accessible to wheelchair users. However, because of the very steep terrain, not all areas of the garden are accessible by wheelchair. The garden’s current visitor information can help you plan for these conditions during your visit.
History and Architecture in Bo-Kaap
The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. Bo-Kaap offers another perspective on the city’s history: the neighbourhood lies at the foot of Signal Hill, on the edge of the city centre, and was formerly known as the Malay Quarter. Its origins date back to the 1760s, when many rental houses were built and rented to enslaved people and political exiles. These people had been brought there from other Dutch colonies in the east, including Batavia, Sumatra, Java and East Africa.
The houses in Bo-Kaap feature Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture. One traditional explanation links their bright colours to earlier rules for rental houses, which required them to remain white. After the rule was lifted and enslaved people were allowed to own property, the owners painted the houses in bright colours as an expression of their freedom. The architectural styles and this traditional explanation of the colours thus offer two different perspectives on the neighbourhood.
The Auwal Mosque, described as South Africa’s oldest mosque, is on Dorp Street. The oldest building in Bo-Kaap is on Wale Street and houses the Bo-Kaap Museum. These streets and buildings provide concrete points of reference for the neighbourhood’s history. A local cooking tour featuring traditional Cape Malay specialities is also available. Check the specific tour offering in advance.
Guided Tours and Collections at the Castle of Good Hope
At the Castle of Good Hope, visitors can join a guided tour and take a closer look at the architecture. Other visitor attractions include the Military Museum, the William Fehr Collection and the African Pottery Collection. This focus combines an appreciation of the architecture with a guided tour and several collections. If a tour or a particular collection is key to your plans, check the latest tour and exhibition arrangements before your visit.
For choosing a travel focus, a direct comparison is useful: Kirstenbosch combines a garden walk with far-reaching views, Bo-Kaap brings together domestic architecture and city history, and the Castle of Good Hope offers guided tours, architecture and collections. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay; you can then use that to guide your search for hotels in Cape Town.
