Discover Piketberg
Accommodation in Piketberg
For a trip to Piketberg, you can consider local history and activities in the surrounding area as different focuses. The self-guided Historic Route leads through Piketberg and showcases historic buildings and the history of the town. The Piketberg Cultural Historical Museum focuses on the town’s own history and the features of its present-day building. Together, Piketberg and its nearby surroundings offer a range of themes to consider when planning your trip.
The Historic Route in Piketberg
The Historic Route is self-guided and runs through Piketberg. Along the way, visitors can discover historic buildings and the history of the town. Stops include the Sheriff’s Office and the original police station, both built in 1926, as well as the original bioscope from the early 1920s. The dates place the three buildings in chronological order: the bioscope is older, while the Sheriff’s Office and police station share the same year of construction. The route can therefore be seen as an introduction to several historic stops, rather than focusing on a single building. Before your trip, check whether a map of the Historic Route is available.
The history of the Piketberg Museum
The museum’s history begins at a former address: the Piketberg Cultural Historical Museum opened in 1983 in Mr Liebenberg’s former home. It remained there for 15 years, then moved next to the old synagogue on Church Street. The current museum building is influenced by Edwardian architecture and recreates an early 20th-century homestead. Most of the furniture in the Piketberg Museum dates from the 1920s. The museum also has a medicinal herb garden, created by a former curator.
Two ways to explore local history
The history of the museum’s locations and its features answer different questions: the sequence of locations tells you where the museum was previously housed; its architecture, furniture and garden describe aspects of the museum today. The Historic Route, by contrast, focuses on individual historic buildings in Piketberg. If you want to explore the town’s history more broadly, you can consider the museum and several buildings in town side by side.
A prominent landmark
The Dutch Reform Church remains one of Piketberg’s prominent landmarks to this day. It adds a point of reference in the townscape to the specific historic stops.
Activities in the surrounding area
Piket-bo-Berg lies near the destination, where hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, fishing and canoeing are available. The list combines outdoor exercise with nature watching and activities on the water. This makes it distinct from the Historic Route: here the focus is on outdoor activities in Piket-bo-Berg, while the route explores historic buildings and the history of Piketberg. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether the town’s cultural attractions or activities in the surrounding area will play a bigger role in your trip.
