Bo'aozhen: Landscapes, Cycling Route and Village Culture
Accommodation in Bo'aozhen
The places in Bo'aozhen offer different highlights: Dongyu Island Tourism Resort, surrounded by water; the landscapes of Shami Village; and the architectural history of Caijiazhai in Liuke Village each represent a different side of the destination. The following places offer specific points of reference.
Dongyu Island: Resort and Cycling Route
Dongyu Island Tourism Resort in Bo'aozhen is surrounded by water and is officially recognized as a national tourism resort. The first section of the Qionghai cycling loop is 92.6 kilometers long and passes through Bo'ao and across Dongyu Island. This brings together two different aspects: the resort's official tourism recognition and the island's place along the route. The length of the first section gives cyclists a concrete measure for understanding this route.
Shami Village: Landscape and Promenade
The diverse landscapes are the main attraction in Shami Village. The village brings together mountain and forest scenery, tropical rural landscapes and hillside settlements, as well as river, sea, lake and spring landscapes. A 1.8-kilometer coastal promenade runs alongside Shami's inland-sea ecological wetland. Six specially designed viewpoints add to the scenery. If a combination of landscapes and village views is important to you, Shami offers a different focus from Dongyu Island, the resort surrounded by water. In 2019, Shami Village received the highest five-coconut rating as a rural tourism destination.
Comparing the Route Lengths
The 92.6 kilometers refers to the first section of the Qionghai cycling loop, while the 1.8 kilometers refers to the coastal promenade in Shami. The comparison shows two different scales: a cycling route section and a promenade beside a wetland.
Caijiazhai and Liuke Village
Caijiazhai in Liuke Village is a group of ancestral residences with a total area of more than 3,000 square meters. Construction took ten years. Despite war, human destruction, earthquakes and typhoons, the complex has remained intact to this day. Here, the Nanyang style refers to the Southeast Asian influence on the architecture; at the same time, local features of Hainan residential architecture remain, and the design incorporates Western relief motifs. Caijiazhai is considered a representative example of Hainan's overseas Chinese culture. As of 2024, the former Haitang Study in Caijiazhai, Liuke Village, is a museum that presents the family's history.
In Liuke Village, the old Liuma ferry crossing and a riverside landscape belt were among the projects completed or under construction as of 2020. In the context of the 2020 project, a tourist water route on the Wanquan River was part of the cultural and village renewal project in Liuke Village. If you plan to visit Liuma, the riverside landscape belt or the water route, check before setting out whether the relevant areas are accessible to visitors or whether the route is operating.
