Bhagalpur can be explored through a range of themes: Jain pilgrimage sites, the history of Vikramshila, its silk tradition and landscapes along the Ganges shape the choices. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide whether you want to focus on religious sites, archaeological history or wildlife observation. The places below each offer a distinct focus.

Jain Tradition, Silk and Remembrance

The Shri Champapur Digamber Jain Siddha Kshetra is located in the village of Nathnagar in Bhagalpur district and is an ancient and historic Jain pilgrimage site. Champapur is described as the world’s only Panch Kalyanaka Kshetra and is associated with the five life milestones of the 12th Tirthankara, Bhagwan Vasupujya. This religious significance makes the site a clear focus for travelers interested in Jain traditions.

Tussar silk, also known as Bhagalpur silk, represents a distinctive, high-quality textile tradition and centuries of craftsmanship. The Bhagalpur Silk Research and Training Institute offers a closer look at its production: visitors can explore it to learn more about silk-making methods. Check visiting arrangements before your trip. Another site of remembrance is Tilka Manjhi Chowk. The place was given this name after a statue of freedom fighter Tilka Manjhi was erected there following India’s independence.

Vikramshila: Center of Learning and Archaeological Site

The ancient Vikramshila University is located in Antichak in the Kahalgaon sub-district and was a center of learning during the Pala dynasty. Its ruins feature ornate stupas, remains of a monastery and meditation halls. Here, the university’s historic role as a place of learning is brought together with the architectural remains of the complex. If you choose Bhagalpur primarily for its cultural history, Vikramshila offers a different perspective from the religious sites: the focus is on the university and its archaeological structures.

The Ganges, Dolphin Sanctuary and Temples

A 50-kilometer stretch of the Ganges between Sultanganj and Kahalgaon was designated a dolphin sanctuary in 1991. The Vikramshila Dolphin Sanctuary offers boat rides and guided tours to observe Ganges dolphins in their natural habitat. Check local operating arrangements before your trip. This gives you a way to distinguish between archaeology and wildlife observation when planning.

The Ajgaibinath Temple in Sultanganj is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. It stands on a rocky hill beside the Ganges and offers views of the river and surrounding hills. Views and access may vary. Sultanganj is also the starting point for the Shrawani Mela pilgrimage: pilgrims collect sacred water from the Ganges there. Held annually during the holy month of Shravan, the Mela is dedicated to Baba Ajgaibinath and Baba Baidyanath in Deoghar; the dates change from year to year.

Other Religious Sites in Bhagalpur

The Maharshi Mehi Ashram campus in Kuppaghat includes the Maharshi Medhi Samadhi Mandir, Santmat Satsang Hall, Maharshi Santsevi Samadhi Sthal and Kuppa Guha, all set in a large garden. Kuppaghat is a pilgrimage site for followers of Santmat. The Ganges flows north of the ashram. These sites offer different religious connections, without needing to be combined into a single focus for your visit.

Other sites also represent different faith traditions. Mahashay Deorhi Durga Mandir is considered religiously and historically significant; Astdhatu Maa Bhagwati has been worshipped there since ancient times. Khanqah-e-Shahbazia is currently used as a shrine, mosque and library. These differences can help you choose specific themes for your trip to Bhagalpur.
