Pilgrimage to Lake Manimahesh

The easiest pilgrimage route to Manimahesh runs from Chamba via Bharmour. Buses go as far as Hadsar; from there, the remaining 13 kilometers must be covered on foot. Check current bus services before traveling. A fair is held at the lake every year on the eighth day of the bright half of the month of Bhadon, attracting thousands of pilgrims. Pilgrims bathe in the sacred water and circumambulate the lake three times.

Temples and historic buildings in Chamba

The Laxmi-Narayan Temple is the main temple in the town of Chamba. It was built in the 10th century in the Shikhara style. The complex includes several other temples, including Radha Krishan, Chandergupta, and Gauri Shankar. The Akhand Chandi Palace in Chamba dates to the 18th century and combines Mughal and British architectural influences.

The Bhuri Singh Museum is also part of the town’s history: it was officially opened on September 14, 1908. In Khajjiar stands the 10th-century Khajji-Naga shrine, which combines Hindu and Mughal architectural elements. Khajjiar itself is a bowl-shaped plateau surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests.

Festivals, public spaces, and handicrafts

Chamba Chowgan serves as a public promenade and recreational area. During the annual Minjar Mela, a large part of the Chowgan becomes a bazaar. The week-long festival begins with the hoisting of the Minjar flag in the historic Chowgan. Both the public space and its use during the festival thus shape Chamba’s cultural life.

Handicraft traditions include Chamba Rumal and Chamba Slippers. Chamba Rumal is embroidered handicraft associated with the patronage of former rulers of the Kingdom of Chamba, and is often given as a wedding gift. Chamba Slippers are handmade leather shoes in natural leather and other colors; their tradition dates back to the time of King Sahil Verman. The two handicraft traditions differ in form: embroidery is central to the Rumal, while the Slippers are handmade leather shoes. Their historical associations also differ: the Rumal is linked to the patronage of former rulers, while the tradition of the shoes dates back to King Sahil Verman.
