Idukki district has many different facets: mountain landscapes and protected areas sit alongside waterfalls, temples and glimpses of local traditions. When planning your trip, you can start by considering what you most want to experience—hiking, wildlife watching, water activities or culture. Attractions and visiting conditions vary; for activities that require permits or advance bookings, it is worth checking the details beforehand.

Mountains, forests and striking landscapes

Eravikulam National Park covers around 97 square kilometres across Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Established in 1978, it is home to the world’s largest wild population of the endangered Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius). Meesapulimala offers a different perspective on the Western Ghats: after Anamudi, its summit is the second-highest in the mountain range. Green hills, tea plantations, pine forests and lush meadows shape the landscape in Vagamon.

Protected areas and striking structures are also part of Idukki’s character. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary covers around 77 square kilometres of dense forests surrounding the Idukki Arch Dam. The dam is a 550-foot-high, parabolic arch dam. The 925-square-kilometre Periyar Tiger Reserve is located in the Western Ghats; Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area covering around 90 square kilometres in the district. Other natural highlights include the seven-tier cascade of Thommankuthu Waterfalls and the hills of Ramakkalmedu. They offer sweeping panoramic views of villages in neighbouring Tamil Nadu; Ramakkalmedu is considered one of the windiest places in Asia.

Hiking, wildlife watching and water activities

The hiking options vary in character. Meesapulimala is a popular destination for trekking and camping. Panchalimedu offers a gentle hike to the summit along a paved stone path. There are special ramps, wheelchairs available on request and accessible toilets; check these facilities before your visit. A popular trekking route in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary leads to Thoovanam Waterfalls. Access conditions can vary by season, so it is a good idea to check them before your trip.

There are various activities to choose from for wildlife watching: guided wildlife safaris are offered at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary; check current permits and schedules separately. In Periyar Tiger Reserve, a boat trip on the lake is considered an ideal way to spot animals such as gaur and sambar. Bamboo rafting is another activity available there. Lakes and reservoirs in Idukki district are also suitable for boating and water sports.

If you are looking for a different kind of outing, Vagamon offers opportunities for paragliding on grassy slopes and open ground. Operators and weather conditions may change. In Vandanmedu, you can observe a cardamom auction with prior permission. Check the schedule and permit process in advance so you can take these requirements into account when planning.

Temples, tea and spice traditions

Cultural sites include Annamalai Temple in Karikodu, an 1,800-year-old Shiva temple. Christian crosses and a Hindu temple stand on the summit of Panchalimedu. In Vagamon, Kurisumala Ashram is a Christian monastic centre. Alongside its landscapes, these places add a cultural dimension to your trip, without requiring you to make any one theme your main focus.

In Munnar, the TATA Tea Museum displays old tea-processing machinery. Guided tours of spice plantations in the district offer insights into traditional farming and spice processing. Visitors to Idukki can also learn about the traditional ways of life of indigenous tribal communities and experience traditional art forms, handicrafts and music. Alongside the well-known natural highlights, agriculture, crafts and cultural expression are also options to explore in their own right.
