The destination of Sagar offers several reasons to travel: archaeological evidence at Eran and Abchand, temple traditions in Rangir, and varied landscapes in its protected areas. When choosing a hotel, it can help to decide on your main focus first. Would you like to concentrate mainly on history and rock paintings, are you interested in the natural areas described here, or are you planning your trip around a festival?

Nature and Protected Areas

Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary lies at the meeting point of the Sagar, Damoh and Narsingpur districts. It encompasses the watersheds of the Ganges and Narmada. Its landscape includes dry deciduous forest in the Vindhya region and teak, which predominates in many areas. The herbivores listed there include nilgai, chinkara, chital, sambar and blackbuck.

Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve offers a different landscape. It covers 2,339 square kilometres across the districts of Sagar, Damoh and Narsinghpur. Its characteristic features include rugged, rocky terrain, open grasslands and dry deciduous forests. Comparing the two protected areas, Nauradehi is notable for both its forests and the listed animal species, while the terrain and vegetation of Veerangana Durgavati are described as particularly distinctive.

Archaeology and Rock Paintings

Eran lies at the confluence of the Bina and Reuta rivers. The village has an interesting collection of archaeological relics. Its most notable statue is a colossal Varaha, about 10 feet tall. Eran is also significant to the prehistory of Madhya Pradesh: it marked the northernmost boundary of the Chalcolithic culture in this state.

In the protected forest of Abchand, the ravines of the Gadheri River contain about a dozen caves carved into the rock, with prehistoric paintings. The largest cave is about 40 feet long and contains more than a dozen images, including depictions of prehistoric activities and hunting scenes. The two archaeological highlights therefore differ: Eran combines a collection of relics with the Varaha statue and its significance to the Chalcolithic culture; in Abchand, the caves and rock paintings take centre stage.

Gadpehra and Rangir

The remains of a summer residence called Shish Mahal, or the Glass Palace, can be found in Gadpehra. The small Motital lake lies north of Gadpehra, below the hill. These recorded sites thus connect a historic building with a specific landscape detail, without making any claims about current access.

Rangir lies on the banks of the Dahar River. Fairs in honour of Harsiddi Devi are held at her temple in the months of Asvina and Chaitra. The Chaitra fair is significant, and many people visit the temple for it. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival tradition, take the months mentioned into account and check the specific event dates before setting off.

Getting to Sagar

Sagar has its own railway station, Sagar Railway Station, with connections to major cities in Madhya Pradesh. Train connections can change, so check the current timetable before travelling.
