Palghar: Coast, Sahyadri and Warli Culture
Accommodation in Palghar
In Palghar district, the landscape stretches from beaches on the Arabian Sea in the west to the Sahyadri mountain ranges in the east. The coastline is 112 kilometres long. Travel experiences include mountain landscapes and waterfalls, Warli art, temples and historical sites. Deciding which of these to focus on gives your trip planning a clear direction.
Mountain landscapes, viewpoints and waterfalls
Suryamal Tourism Center is a scenic mountain destination in the Sahyadri Mountains. Visitors come for sunrise and sunset, as well as during the monsoon season to see its waterfalls. There are trekking opportunities in the nearby mountains. Hanuman Point is a sunrise viewpoint surrounded by a valley and high hills. Devkobacha Kada is also located near Hanuman Point: a green valley 500 feet deep.
The waterfalls offer varied scenery: Kalmandavi Waterfall is tiered and plunges 100 metres; Dabhosa Waterfall falls almost 300 feet amid dense forests. Hiradpada Waterfall is about 0.5 kilometres from Hiradpada village. At Kelva Fort, water and history meet: the fort is located on Kelva Lake, is completely surrounded by water and offers panoramic views of the natural landscape.
The ascent to Kamandurg requires crossing four streams; the third is 40 feet wide. The mountain is densely forested and offers a view of Vasai Creek. Activities offered at Dabhosa Waterfall include rappelling, crossing the valley, trekking, kayaking, a Burma Bridge, laddering, night walks and jungle cooking. This range shows how varied nature experiences in Palghar can be—from viewpoints and waterfalls to activities on the water and in the forest.
Warli art and historical buildings
Warli painting is part of the cultural heritage of the tribal communities in Palghar district. Its motifs depict tribal customs, everyday scenes, weddings, dances, festivals and events in nature. In Jawhar, visitors can explore local villages where artisans practise Warli art, watch artists at work and learn about the history of the painting tradition. The art uses natural colours and complex geometric patterns. Opportunities to watch and learn may vary from household to household.
Several historic sites offer their own distinctive character. Tarapur Fort is located in Boisar village in Palghar taluka and has wells and gardens, as well as historic remains of a church and a Dominican monastery. Kaldurg Fort is a ridge about 1,550 feet high with a rectangular summit. Vasai Fort has walls more than 4.5 kilometres long and eleven bastions.
Arnala Fort is also known as Jaldurg or Janjire Arnala. Mahmud Begda had it built in 1516; the fort is surrounded by water. Inside are temples dedicated to Tryambakeshwar, Bhavani Mata, Kalika Mata and Mahadev. Shirgaon Fort was renovated by the Portuguese, is now in ruins, and features hidden caves and a rare multi-stemmed palm tree. Jai Vilas Palace, also called Raj Bari, was the royal residence of the rulers of Mukne. Its neoclassical architecture and expansive gardens offer a different contrast to the forts.
Temples, festivals and chikoo in Bordi
Jivdani Temple is a 150-year-old hilltop temple in Virar, reached by climbing about 1,375 steps. Mahalakshmi Temple in Dahanu is associated with the traditional Tarpa dance during festival periods. A 15-day Mahalakshmi Yatra is also held there, beginning on Hanuman Jayanti. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the latest dates in advance.
In Bordi, the chikoo orchards are a destination in their own right: visitors can stroll through the green groves and sample fresh chikoo fruit. The annual Chikoo Festival takes place in February and offers a chance to discover chikoo products and local art. If you’re planning around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. Jet skiing, boating and canoeing are also possible in the Arabian Sea waters off Bordi.
