Shaniwar Wada was built by Bajirao I in 1736. There are also forts with other historical associations and nature destinations whose special highlights fall in different seasons. Bhigwan attracts a wide variety of migratory birds, particularly in winter, while the Kaas Plateau bursts into bloom during the monsoon. Both your choice of theme and the timing of your visit therefore matter when planning your trip.

Forts with Different Histories

Sinhagad is located in the village of Donaje in Haveli taluka, on a hill 1,290 meters high. The fort was formerly known as Kondhana and was renamed after the death of Tanaji Malusare. Along with this story behind its name, its elevation is also a distinctive feature of the landscape. Sinhagad can be reached by bus. If you plan to travel by bus, check the schedule before setting out.

Shivneri Fort is located in Junnar taluka of Pune district and is considered the historically significant birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. Panhala Fort near Kolhapur offers a different historical perspective: it was built in the 12th century by the Shilahara dynasty as a strategic fortification to monitor important trade routes between Maharashtra’s interior and the Konkan coast. While Shivneri is primarily associated with Shivaji Maharaj, the history of Panhala Fort illustrates the importance of trade routes in choosing a strategic location for a fort.

Nature Destinations in Different Seasons

The Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary lies along the backwaters of the Ujani Dam on the Bhima River and attracts a wide variety of migratory birds, particularly in winter. The Kaas Plateau, also known as Kaas Pathar, is about 25 kilometers from the city of Satara. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and is considered a biodiversity hotspot, with more than 850 species of wildflowers.

The Kaas Plateau’s special natural highlight comes during the monsoon; the best time to visit is generally considered to be from late August to early October. Bhigwan and Kaas thus offer different seasonal highlights: wintering migratory birds are the main draw at one, while monsoon blooms are the highlight at the other. If you’re planning your trip around nature, this difference can help you choose when to go.

Protected Areas and Rural Culture

The protected areas also differ in character. Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in Sangli district is a man-made sanctuary covering an area of about 10.87 square kilometers. Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary in Kolhapur district is home to Indian bison, leopards, sloth bears, wild boars, deer, giant squirrels, and wild dogs. Sagareshwar is notable for how it was established and its approximate area, while Radhanagari is distinguished by the variety of animal species listed here.

Morachi Chincholi in Pune district offers a different focus. This ecotourism destination is known for its peacock population, glimpses of rural life, and traditional Maharashtrian culture. Visitors interested in nature and regional ways of life will find a different experience here than at the forts or seasonal nature destinations.
