Travel interests in West Garo Hills include Nokrek National Park, the views from Tura Peak, Garo traditions and archaeological traces at Wadagokgre. Tura is the district headquarters. When planning, you can consider nature, culture and getting there as separate questions.

Nokrek, Peaks and Trails

Nokrek National Park forms the heart of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve. From Daribokgre, a three-and-a-half-kilometre trek leads to Nokrek Peak. Trail conditions and permit requirements may vary; check both before setting out.

A footpath built for the Deputy Commissioner during British rule is still in use, allowing tourists and adventurers to climb Tura Peak. From there, views extend over the lower Brahmaputra Valley and the golden-yellow plains of Bangladesh. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Landscape and Waterways

Tosekgre, a nature and landscape destination, is located in the Rongram block of the district. The Garo Hills Conservation Area includes West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya.

Kata Beel is an important fishing spot in the Garo Hills and is well known among anglers and fishers. Pelga Falls is seven kilometres from Tura and is used by anglers and picnickers; this use may vary seasonally.

Garo Culture and Local History

The residents of Sasatgre preserve Garo customs, culture and traditions. The village is surrounded by abundant orange orchards and productive orange trees; seasonal production varies.

Excavations at Wadagokgre showed that Buddhism, Hinduism and a combination of the two religions were practised in the extensive settlement. The two places offer different cultural perspectives: Sasatgre foregrounds preserved Garo traditions, while Wadagokgre highlights religious practices revealed through excavation.

In the district’s cultural context, Wangala is a Garo festival associated with agricultural work. It is usually celebrated in October or November; the date varies from village to village. The highlight of the celebrations is a colourful dance: men and women dance in separate lines in their finest clothes to the sounds of drums, gongs and horns. If Wangala is a focus of your trip, check the date for the village in advance.

Meghalaya in a Broader Context

In the wider destination of Meghalaya, the cultural landscapes of the living root bridges, “Jingkieng jri,” add a regional perspective; they are on India’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage. This context is broader than the local and district themes of West Garo Hills.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

West Garo Hills is connected by National Highway NH 217. A drivable jeep road leads from Oragitok to Sasatgre; Oragitok is on the Tura–Asanangre–Williamnagar state highway. Road conditions can change, so check them before travelling. For orientation: NH 217 connects the district, while the jeep road from Oragitok provides access to Sasatgre.

Buses run regularly between Tura and Guwahati during the day and at night. Check the current timetable before your trip, as transport operators may change.
