Tamil Nadu reveals many different sides through its rock monuments, temple architecture, mangrove landscapes and lagoons. You can tailor your search to the highlights you actually want to experience.

Rock Art, Temples and Painting

The monument group at Mahabalipuram was carved out of rock along the Coromandel Coast in the 7th and 8th centuries under the Pallava kings. The Great Living Chola Temples represent a different architectural focus: they are considered an outstanding creative achievement in the architectural expression of the pure Dravidian temple type. The group includes the Brihadeeshwara Temple in Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur and the Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram. Together, these places and the rock monuments represent different ways of experiencing Tamil Nadu’s temple architecture.

Worship is also an important part of the religious and cultural landscape. The Thillai Nataraja Temple is considered one of the most important places of worship for Shaivites. In Madurai, the Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a symbol of the city’s spiritual grandeur and draws devotees from near and far. Those interested in handicrafts will find another special focus in Thanjavur: the city is considered an important centre for religion, art and architecture in South India, and Thanjavur painting is distinguished by its detailed designs and gold-leaf embellishments.

Backwaters, Mangroves and Coast

In Pichavaram, you can experience the backwaters from different perspectives. Water sports include rowing, kayaking and canoeing; the Pichavaram forest also offers waterscapes and trips through the backwaters. The main difference between these activities is whether you want to be out on the water yourself or prefer a ride through the landscape. The mangroves of Pichavaram are also home to a unique variety of flora and fauna.

The coastal landscape offers a variety of impressions, too. Mamallapuram has beaches along the Coromandel Coast. Pulicat Lake, meanwhile, is a large brackish-water lagoon that lies partly in Tamil Nadu and partly in the state of Andhra Pradesh; it is the second-largest lagoon in South India. Beaches, mangrove backwaters and lagoons are therefore clearly distinct themes to consider when planning your trip.

Protected Areas and Outdoor Activities

Chennai is home to Guindy National Park, a 2.70 km² protected area in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the few national parks within a city. Another natural destination is the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India and Tamil Nadu. The two places offer different experiences: one is a protected area within a city, while the other is a bird sanctuary known for its long history.

The Kalvarayan Hills in Kallakurichi district offer opportunities for trekking and adventure activities. Trek Tamil Nadu is designated as the sole recognised organisation for trekking in Tamil Nadu’s forest and wilderness areas. Since trail availability and operating details may change, check them before making specific plans.

Railway and Regional Cuisine

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs through Mettupalayam, Conoor and Ooty. These place names give a precise indication of its route.

Regional products and food culture are also part of the state’s character. The tea plantations of Kolukkumalai are known for leaves with a distinctive flavour. Traditional Tamil cuisine is based on rice, lentils, grains and vegetables; meals are traditionally served on banana leaves. A distinctive tea product and a regional serving tradition thus complement the landscape and cultural experiences. Whether you want to focus on temple art, waterscapes, natural areas or cuisine, the places and themes mentioned offer different starting points for planning your trip and searching for a suitable hotel.
