West Singhbhum offers a range of travel experiences: forests and wildlife in Saranda, orchids near Tholkobad, waterfalls in different locations, as well as temples, archaeological remains and fairs. Chaibasa is the district headquarters and a specific reference point for travel from Ranchi. If you are looking for a hotel in West Singhbhum, you can first consider whether nature, culture or religious events are especially important to your trip.

Forest and Biodiversity

Saranda Forest is a habitat for the central Indian elephant population, which migrates between Odisha, parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The forest’s recorded biodiversity includes 28 mammal species, 60 bird species, 20 reptile species, 8 amphibian species and 63 butterfly species. These figures refer to the species inventory and do not represent a current count.

Another special feature is Tholkobad: Located at an altitude of 550 meters in the heart of the forest, it is a distinctive orchid habitat, including all 11 Dendrobium species. The forest landscape and biodiversity thus form a distinct focus for trip planning, separate from the district’s temples and fairs.

Temples, Archaeological Remains and Fairs

At Benisagar, old remains of temples and sculptures are located on the tank’s southeastern bank. Sculptures of Ganesha, Hanuman, Agni, Mahisasurmardini Durga, Bhairava, Yamuna and Lakulisha are found in the Devasthana area near Benisagar. These places and figures give the cultural part of the trip a specific connection to Benisagar.

Mahadebsal has an important temple dedicated to the god Mahadev. A large fair is held there every year on the occasion of Shivaratri. Kera has a Bhagwati temple that attracts many devotees; the place is also known for a three-day fair on the occasion of Chaitra-Sankranti. A fair is held annually in Ramtirtha on Makar Sankranti in January. Each of these festivals has its own religious occasion and location.

The Samij Ashram in Anandpur Block is listed as a tourist attraction in West Singhbhum. Together with the temples and fairs in Mahadebsal, Kera and Ramtirtha, it complements the natural attractions with religious and cultural destinations.

Waterfalls, Dam and Park

Hirni Waterfall is located in Bandgaon Block and is considered a popular picnic spot amid dense forest. Pansua Dam in Sonua Block is listed as a tourist attraction in West Singhbhum. The two places offer a different focus from the temples and fairs; their locations in different blocks help distinguish the destinations.

Other waterfalls can be distinguished by their respective locations: Ambia Waterfall is in Bangurkiya village in Goelkera Block, while Argundi Waterfall is in Argundi village in Khuntpani Block. A waterfall on the Baitarni River is located in Ramtirtha. Thus, both the villages and blocks—and, in the case of Ramtirtha, the river—are part of each location’s description.

Shahid Park adds another park to the list: It is newly established and managed by the Government of Jharkhand.
