Wadi Mousa is best understood through Petra’s archaeological heritage. Petra Archaeological Park covers 264 dunums, or 264,000 square meters, within Wadi Musa, and has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. If you are looking for a hotel in Wadi Mousa, this connection to Petra gives the destination a cultural and archaeological focus.

Petra’s heritage in Petra Archaeological Park

At its heart is the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, carved into the rock more than 2,000 years ago. Petra Archaeological Park also includes rose-colored rocky mountains. Archaeological history and a striking rocky landscape thus come together as distinct aspects of the destination.

Ma’an as a regional backdrop

Ma’an Governorate lies in southern Jordan and is the country’s largest governorate by area. Its area is estimated at 32,832 square kilometers, around 37 percent of Jordan’s total area.

Across the wider destination of Ma’an, Petra’s archaeological remains include extensive funerary and temple architecture, religious sanctuaries, canals, tunnels, diversion dams, cisterns and water reservoirs. This variety brings together architectural, religious and water-related elements. Petra itself is a protected area within Petra Archaeological Park; the park is managed by Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The Siq and its rock formations

The Siq, a natural sandstone gorge, is located near the destination. It winds for just over 1.2 kilometers toward the ancient city of Petra, is only three meters wide in places, and opens out at the Treasury. Length and width describe two different features: the gorge’s winding course and its particularly narrow sections. Together, they give a clear sense of the landscape’s form without conflating the Siq with the city of Petra.

Petra Museum: history and artifacts

Petra Museum is located near the destination and displays 280 artifacts from various periods in five halls. The exhibition covers Petra’s history as well as the way of life and civilization of the Nabataeans. Other topics include tools, statues and other historical objects discovered during archaeological excavations in Petra. Both historical context and specific finds are therefore at the center of the exhibition. Exhibition details may change; check the current displays before visiting.

A hands-on silver-making experience

The Silver Making Experience offers a different cultural focus. Participants design, shape, measure and solder a personal silver piece. The process combines design with the craftsmanship involved in making an individual object. If, in addition to Petra’s archaeological heritage, you are interested in how a silver piece is made, this experience offers a thematic contrast to exploring historical finds and landscapes.
