Kota Bahru can be explored through a variety of places and themes: Pasar Siti Khadijah brings together a wide range of market stalls, while museums cover the history of Kelantan and the Second World War. Handicrafts and cultural performances round out the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you plan your trip around your interests. At Gelanggang Seni, the performance season is also something to consider when planning.

Market and a wide variety of goods

Pasar Siti Khadijah is Kota Bahru’s main market, where most of the businesses are run by women. Its general selection includes traditional kuih and prepared foods as well as batik, songket, everyday clothing and fresh produce. Gold and silver goods are also sold. The range of goods may vary. The selection therefore extends from food and groceries to clothing and gold and silver goods.

Architecture with diverse influences

Kota Sultan Ismail Petra is a large gateway structure in the center of Kota Bahru, shaped by traditional Kelantanese Malay architecture. It features five towers decorated with replicas of the Quran. Dataran Cheng Ho reflects a different architectural reference: its design is inspired by Chinese cultural influences. The comparison thus highlights two distinct influences—the traditional Kelantanese Malay style of the gateway structure and the Chinese cultural influences at Dataran Cheng Ho.

Museums: Kelantan, the sultanate and the Second World War

Muzium Negeri presents a diverse collection of images and artifacts relating to the history of the state of Kelantan. Istana Jahar houses the Royal Museum of the state of Kelantan. It traces the history of the Kelantan Sultanate from its beginnings to the present reign and displays weapons and traditional clothing. Muzium Perang explores the history of the Second World War through photographs and artifacts, particularly in Kelantan. It is located at Jalan Sultan, next to Padang Merdeka in Kota Bahru, as a Second World War memorial.

The museums have distinct focuses: Muzium Negeri looks at the history of the state, Istana Jahar at the history of the sultanate and its exhibits, and Muzium Perang at wartime history. If you’re interested in a particular historical topic, you can make your choice accordingly.

Handicrafts and cultural performances

Muzium Kraftangan is located on the grounds of Istana Balai Besar. Handicraft demonstrations can be watched on the ground floor. This practical focus on handicrafts complements the city’s historical collections and architectural themes.

Gelanggang Seni features Rebana Ubi, Gasing, Congkak, Seni Silat and Kertok. There are also demonstrations of wau-making, Wayang Kulit and cultural performances. Performances take place from February through the end of October. They are suspended from November to January because of the northeast monsoon; there are also no performances throughout Ramadan. Check the current performance schedule before your visit so you can take these seasonal restrictions into account when planning your trip.
