Georgetown between trading port and World Heritage Site

Georgetown is a historic colonial city on the Strait of Malacca. Its history was shaped by its former role as a trading port connecting East and West. The UNESCO-recognized urban landscape encompasses an exceptional variety of commercial and townhouses. Cultural themes that come together here include architecture, religious diversity, collections and maritime history. This lets you get to know the city from different perspectives, rather than focusing your trip on a single theme.

Religious architecture along the Street of Harmony

The Kapitan Keling Mosque, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, Goddess of Mercy Temple and St. George's Church stand along the Street of Harmony. Each building represents a different religious tradition and architectural style. Four places of worship belonging to different faiths line just a few hundred meters of the street. The street represents mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, which have shaped Penang for more than two centuries. The different architectural styles and the street’s cultural significance together offer a vivid insight into this diversity.

Shophouses, museums and street food

Historic shophouses are as much a part of the cityscape as museums and galleries. Visitors can explore the houses and discover museums and galleries. The vibrant street-food scene offers another perspective, reflecting the city’s multicultural roots. Georgetown thus brings together architectural landmarks, exhibitions and food culture as different ways to explore the city’s history.

The Penang State Museum is housed in a restored colonial building dating from 1912. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions feature artifacts, photographs, documents, works of art and multimedia presentations. The subject matter ranges from early settlement and the colonial era to today’s multicultural society. Temporary exhibition content can change; if you are interested in a particular topic, check what is currently on display in advance.

On Armenian Street, you’ll find craft workshops and galleries, as well as murals such as Ernest Zacharevich’s “Boy on Chair” and “Kids on Bicycle.” Iron caricature sculptures reflect Penang’s local history and culture. The Yap Kongsi building is also located there, next to the Yap Temple, within the George Town Heritage Enclave. The street thus brings together art and crafts with tangible reminders of local culture.

Collections spanning Peranakan culture and theatrical traditions

The Pinang Peranakan Mansion was once the home of Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Quee. It displays more than 1,000 carefully preserved antiques, including furniture, porcelain, jewelry and traditional costumes, and showcases Peranakan culture. The Teochew Puppet and Opera House offers a different focus: it preserves the traditions of Teochew opera and traditional glove puppetry. Its exhibits include handmade puppets, costumes, musical instruments and historic stage props. The contrast shows the variety of the city’s cultural collections, from antiques and costumes to theatrical objects.

Colonial history and maritime heritage

Fort Cornwallis was originally built by Captain Francis Light to protect the young British settlement. Its surviving bastions, cannons and historic buildings illustrate Penang’s colonial history. The Penang Ferry Museum, aboard the restored ferry Pulau Pinang, offers a maritime perspective. It shows the ferry’s role in connecting George Town and Butterworth across the Penang Strait. While the fortifications tell the story of the colonial era, the museum focuses on a mode of transport that connected the two places.

Cultural program at Ruang Kongsi

Ruang Kongsi regularly hosts exhibitions, talks, workshops, film screenings, performances and cultural programs. Its program therefore ranges from talks and workshops to film and performance. If a particular event is important to your travel plans, check the dates before visiting.
