Shah Alam: Lakes, Gardens and Leisure Activities
Accommodation in Shah Alam
Shah Alam offers several distinct attractions: lakes and landscaped parks, botanical collections, architecture, and sports and leisure activities. When planning your trip, consider which focus matters most to you: landscapes and water, plants and animals, architectural interest, or active recreation. The places below offer specific options for these different interests.
Lakes and Parkland
The Shah Alam Lake Gardens cover 43 hectares. Landscape architect Fumiaki Takano designed the park, which opened in 1985 as the first public park in Selangor. You can rent pedal boats and kayaks on the interconnected lakes to explore the water.
Plants, Animals and Activities at Taman Botani
At Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam, plants, animals and outdoor activities offer distinct points of interest. The cactus garden contains more than 3,000 plants from at least 145 varieties; plant collections and numbers may change. The Animal Park is home to porcupines, rabbits, deer, horses and various birds, among other animals. These animal populations may also change.
If you would rather go hiking than explore collections in the botanical garden, you can hike up Bukit Sapu Tangan and take in views of the city. SkyTrex Adventures offers aerial obstacle courses there, where visitors can fly, swing, glide and traverse the course by hand. Check before your visit whether SkyTrex is currently operating.
A direct comparison can help you choose between these green spaces: at the Lake Gardens, you can explore interconnected lakes by pedal boat or kayak; at Taman Botani, you can visit the plant collection and Animal Park or hike up Bukit Sapu Tangan for views of the city. This sets water-based activities apart from garden and hiking options.
Architecture and Landscaped Settings
The Sultan Alam Shah Museum in Shah Alam is housed in a building whose design is based on a traditional Minangkabau house. The Selangor Japan Friendship Garden is located beside the East Lake of the Shah Alam Lake Gardens. Its Japanese-inspired landscape, bridges and bonsai trees make it a suitable backdrop for wedding photos. The museum and garden therefore offer different points of interest: the museum focuses on the design of a building, while the Friendship Garden features landscape elements that make it suitable as a photo backdrop.
Sports Facilities at Shah Alam Extreme Park
Shah Alam Extreme Park has facilities for inline skating and cycling, a climbing wall, a paintball arena and futsal courts. The range extends beyond a single sport; depending on which facilities are important to your visit, check their availability in advance. Unlike the gardens, the focus here is on specific sports and leisure activities, not plants, lakes or architecture.
