Muzium Daerah Kemaman in Chukai

Near Kemaman, in Chukai, you will find Muzium Daerah Kemaman. The museum occupies a 0.2-acre plot at Lot 132, Jalan Sulaimani. The building was constructed in the 1920s; English and Islamic influences come together in its architecture to create a Moorish style. It formerly housed the office of the mine manager of The Nanyo Kogyo Koshi Company. Its distinctive architectural form thus sits alongside a former mining-related function.

Terengganu and its coastal route

As a wider travel destination, Terengganu has a 224-kilometre coastline. The Terengganu Scenic Drive connects coastal destinations from Kemaman through Kuala Terengganu to Besut. The scenic route passes through Kemasik, Paka, Dungun, Marang (Kelulut), Chendering, Batu Buruk, Penarik, Mangkuk, Setiu Wetland, Benting Lintang and Pantai Air Tawar in Besut. Kemaman is therefore part of a regional connection that encompasses several named coastal locations in Terengganu.

Culture and markets in Terengganu

In Terengganu, the 23-hectare Islamic Civilization Park is located on Wan Man Island in Kuala Terengganu. It offers an interactive exploration of Islamic monuments and includes 21 replicas of structures from the history of the Islamic world. The Crystal Mosque is the park's landmark and a new landmark of Kuala Terengganu. The monuments and replicas thus provide a cultural focus distinct from the architectural history of Muzium Daerah in Chukai.

Terengganu's markets also offer different highlights. Pasar Payang is located on the banks of the Sungai Terengganu in Kuala Terengganu and offers traditional handicrafts such as batik, silk fabrics, songket, brocade and metalware. Pasar Marang offers fresh seafood, traditional Malay food and local handicrafts. At Benteng Marang, visitors can walk, cycle or ride a motorcycle.

Mining history, islands and nature

Bukit Besi in Terengganu preserves traces of mining. These include a former railway line, tunnels and accommodation, as well as a chimney, an ore stockpile, a tin-processing plant and a crushing plant. Tasik Puteri near Bukit Besi was formed by iron ore mining and is being developed as a recreational area. This regional theme thus brings together traces of mining and a lake associated with the industry.

The Terengganu Marine Park comprises four major archipelagos: Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Tenggol. Pulau Kapas lies about six kilometres off the coast of Marang. More than 150 bird species have been recorded at Kenyir Lake. From May to September, Rantau Abang is one of six places worldwide visited by turtles. These details complement the cultural and historical themes with island groups, bird species and a specific seasonal highlight.
