Pokhara brings together cultural sites, lakeside places and outdoor activities. Its varied themes range from mountaineering and Gurkha history to the ways of life and history of the Gurungs, Thakalis and Tharus. There are also religious sites by the water, as well as boating, birdwatching, trekking and mountain biking. When planning your trip, you can prioritise these themes according to your interests and consider the conditions for individual activities separately.

Culture and History

The museums focus on different subjects. The International Mountain Museum in Rato Pairo explores mountaineering through historical documents, records and chronicles. The Gurkha Memorial Museum in Pardi displays uniforms and medals—including the Victoria Cross—as well as pictures of Gurkha infantry regiments, engineer, signals and transport regiments, and the Gurkha contingent of the Singapore Police Force. The Pokhara Museum focuses on the ways of life and history of the Gurungs, Thakalis and Tharus, using models, photographs and artefacts.

The Annapurna Regional Museum, also known as the Natural History Museum, is located at Prithvi Narayan Campus, east of the Old Bazaar. A schedule for the International Mountain Museum from 7 April 2019 listed daily opening hours of 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, 365 days a year. Before travelling, check directly with the museum to see whether these hours are still in effect.

Stupa and Lakeside Temples

The World Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa on a hill on the southern edge of Phewa Lake. Barahi Temple is on a small island in Fewa Lake; it can be reached by boat from Lakeside in less than ten minutes. The two places differ in their setting and orientation: the pagoda is characterised by its stupa and hilltop location, while the temple’s island setting means travelling there by boat from Lakeside.

Activities and Conditions

Pokhara’s attractions include boating, birdwatching, trekking and mountain biking. Conditions vary: birdwatching is seasonal, and sightings may vary; trekking and mountain biking routes and access conditions also vary. Conditions and availability can vary for boating, too. This distinction is useful when choosing an activity: for birdwatching, the season and sightings matter; for the two route-based activities, routes and access matter; and for boating, the relevant conditions and availability matter.

Air Sports in the Pokhara Valley

In recent years, the Pokhara Valley has developed as a destination for adventure sports such as paragliding and ultralight aircraft flights. Current operating conditions for these activities may vary. If you are planning such a flight, take the relevant conditions into account.

Pokhara as a Starting Point for Your Hotel Search

Cultural and historical collections, religious sites by the water and outdoor activities offer different points of interest. If you are planning air sports, consider the Pokhara Valley as a separate travel area. Check the current conditions there and the seasonal nature of birdwatching when making specific plans.
