An Châu is known for its annual boat racing festival and religious cultural heritage. If you are planning a stay around a specific event, the festival calendar provides a special point of reference for timing. The race is tied to the lunar calendar and also depends on the river’s water level.

The Boat Racing Festival: Date and Occasion

An Châu’s traditional boat racing festival takes place every year on the 8th, 9th and 10th days of the fourth lunar month. It represents the training of river combat units attributed to General Vi Đức Thăng. The festival was revived in 2000 and has been held annually since then. Check the festival dates for your travel year before planning a stay around them.

The program also includes singing competitions among the Tày, Nùng and Dao communities. The boat race is also included on the national list of intangible cultural heritage. Together, the festival tradition, musical competitions and remembrance of river combat units give the annual event its distinctive cultural context.

The River, Racecourse and Boats

The festival takes place in An Châu town, in Sơn Động District. Its key locations include Đình–Chùa Chẽ, Nghè Chải and a stretch of the Lục Nam River. The river flows through An Châu and is also known there as the An Châu River. In this way, the festival connects religious sites with events along the river in a local setting.

The racecourse is about 300 to 400 meters long. This is distinct from the description of the river stretch: it is considered relatively wide and is 1 to 2.5 meters deep. The race uses dugout canoes, each of which can carry seven people. The scoring also differs from a straightforward race: the winner is not determined solely by which boat reaches the finish line fastest. The value of the bamboo lot drawn by the team at the finish also counts.

The race can only take place once rain at the end of spring and beginning of summer has sufficiently filled the river. For travel planning, both the lunar-calendar festival dates and the seasonal water conditions are therefore important. Both are part of the event, but neither alone tells you what conditions you will find on a particular day of your trip. Check the festival dates and current event information before travelling.

Religious Sites and Local Traditions

The Đình–Chùa Chẽ complex is dedicated to the village’s tutelary spirit and Generals Cao Sơn and Quý Minh. According to tradition, they are considered generals from the time of the Hùng kings. The complex was recognized as a provincial historical and cultural monument in 2003. It serves as a place of religious practice for people from the district and beyond.

Miếu Đức Ông is also associated with a local tradition. According to this account, the site commemorates a general of Lê Lợi who led river combat units and trained the local population to use dugout canoes. During the festival, the religious portion at Miếu Đức Ông is followed by the continuation of events at Nghè Chải, where the boat race begins. If you are interested in religious traditions and their connection to the festival, these sites offer insight into different parts of the event as it has been passed down.

Plan Your Trip and Stay

An Châu is a junction and transfer point for two important interregional roads. As route conditions and signage can change, check current route information before setting out. If you are planning a hotel stay around the boat race, first find out the possible festival dates for that year. If your focus is on religious cultural heritage, Đình–Chùa Chẽ and the tradition associated with Miếu Đức Ông may offer a different perspective for planning your trip.
